He's very sympathetic to the idea we’re all imperfect — he recognizes that. They talk about forgiveness. He's a moral philosopher. He talks about the natural world.
Dan says that intellect is important for morality. But it doesn’t lead directly to being good. Your heart & character matter.
People put people on pedestals. We get overly hopeful and lean on people, assume they’re better than they are. They touch on the Catholic Church scandal. They tried to preserve the illusion of holiness, so they covered up for crimes. Dan talks about the mystique and aura of being perfect.
Dan's father is agnostic, his older brother a minister. Dan wanted to be a believer. He believes good drives people, but circumstances make them maladaptive. When they're wrong, they drive to the wrong place at the wrong time.
