John Lawyer’s life took him from rural Oklahoma to the battlefields of the Middle East, where over a decade of military service left him “broken” and searching for meaning. After leaving the army, Lawyer wandered aimlessly for seven years, struggling to find his purpose outside of the structure and adrenaline of war.

It was during this lost period that Lawyer had a profound spiritual awakening that changed the course of his life. “I had this moment of pure lightening and understanding,” he recalled. “It was a great warm feeling.” Lawyer realized our essential oneness and connection. He discovered his calling was to help others find their own inner light and wholeness, whether they recognized it or not.

Launching the Kishar spiritual community two years ago allowed Lawyer to fulfill this purpose by providing a space for meaningful connection and spiritual exploration. Through conversations, meditations and affirmations, the community aims to guide people on their journey of self-discovery.

Lawyer knows darkness and trauma firsthand from his military experiences. But he believes living in alignment by caring for mind, body and soul leads to greater peace—not just for oneself, but for one’s entire community. When asked the deepest questions of life’s purpose, Lawyer’s answer is that the journey itself is the destination, and enjoying each moment of the path is key.

Lawyer’s story shows the transformative power of spiritual awakening, even in the unlikeliest of places or people. By changing one’s own part of the world for the better, as he strives to do each day, the ripple effects of harmony spread outward in ways we can never fully know.

He acts as one of several guides for Kishar, a non-profit online spiritual community for people to share their journey and explore their own unique spiritual path.
