Genesis 42: 29-38

Responsibility should not include condemnation when situations do not go well. Joseph’s father was weighed down by guilt and condemnation because he felt responsible for Joseph’s death (or so he thought).

This thought made him close his eyes to the opportunity and breakthrough that God was placing in front of him – allowing Benjamin to go to Egypt (in the first instance), we see that he struggled with the thought because of the fear of losing him like Joseph. 

Let’s drop the weight, and let go of condemnation and any condemning thoughts suggested by the devil, and embrace where God is calling us to.

Genesis 42: 25-28, 42:35  NKJV

When the brothers of Joseph were leaving Egypt, Joseph sent them off with filled sacks and returned their money to them. But when they found out, their hearts failed them, and they said, “What is this that God has done to us?"

Condemnation is a thief! It’s a steamer of the joys of blessings! Just as we read and discussed in the podcast today. Instead of them being grateful for the blessings, their hearts failed them, and they were so scared. 

Bringing this to our world today, one can be so wrapped up in condemnation that they don’t consider themselves worthy of the love of God. The devil, who is the accuser of brethren, is just pumping weighty thoughts to derail, disarm, and shift our focus from God. Let’s not fall for his schemes, and remember this very truth!

Genesis 42: 13-23, 42:31  NLT

We will continue our discussion on guilt, condemnation, and shame. We discuss the difference between conviction and condemnation and what to do when one is condemned. 

Like the brothers of Joseph, there are so many people who are stuck and pin down by condemnation, not knowing that condemnation is the devil’s strategy against us.

Conviction on its own, is the Holy Spirit’s attempt to make us see the fact that we have done wrong and repent of it. Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit as a way of redirecting us to the right path. 

God never condemns, He convicts and corrects. Do not wallow in condemnation. Ask God for mercy and forgiveness, and please forgive yourself. As important, whatever the Holy Spirit asks one to do, no matter how small or uncomfortable it is, please go ahead and do it. There in lies your healing.

Genesis 42: 13-23, 42:31  NLT

The brothers of Joseph were caught up in guilt and condemnation as a result of what they had done to Joseph in the past. It was so bad to the point that they related instances of trouble as a consequence of what they had done to Joseph. Even 12 years after the first incident. 

This is how guilt, condemnation, and shame can be a huge weight in someone’s life. It can prevent you from making progress because of the weight one is carrying in the mind. As the mind is never at ease. 

We also sometimes confuse accountability with condemnation, i.e., “I or we deserve” this to happen, so our minds are expecting such a consequence, but that shouldn’t be the case. Does anyone deserve Jesus dying on the cross for our sins? God is so merciful that He forgives our sins.

Condemnation is the Devil’s strategy against us to slow us down and ultimately bring us down. It is not from God. God does not condemn us. 

“There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).”

Genesis 42: 7-20 NIV

As Joseph tested his brothers to see their credibility, he did not do so out of justice. He showed clearly that he feared God by his actions – letting most of them go to provide food for their families. 

It is easier to show love to those who deserve it. But here, the brothers were logically undeserving of Joseph’s love. But because God is a God of love, Joseph reflected that love of God by pardoning his brothers. We are meant to love our enemies and do good to those who despise us (Matt 5:44). It is really hard to let go, but we should always obey because that is what God wants us to do.

Joseph had the power to execute them without being questioned, but he showed love and mercy.

Genesis 42: 7-20 NLT

The seasons we go through in life teach us different lessons. One peculiar lesson is to love and forgive those who may have hurt us in the process, and love them. Like Joseph, our minds are transformed to see and show the love of God. 

Reiterating or paying back is not God's plan. We are to love and show forth God’s love to the world.

Genesis 42: 7-17 NLT

Seasons are about us—you and me—not about anyone else—e.g., the people that may have wronged us in the winter season—as an example–Potiphar throwing Joseph in prison or Joseph’s brothers selling him to the Midianites.

In many cases we say things like - when my seasons change I will [feel in the blanks] to show them… God is not about “showing" them. God is about us shining our light for His Glory. 

When Joseph became the prime minister of Egypt, he didn’t go back to Canaan to his brothers to “show” them based on what they did to him. He was so focused on the assignment. a huge assignment, I must say. Obviously, everyone that knew him before and after were Wowed by the transformation.

God doesn’t elevate us so we can pay back the hurt, but so that we can shine our light and be an influence in the world for Him.

Genesis 41: 56-57 NIV

Preparation and obedience are the emphasis of today.

Egypt was well prepared for the famine season that was about to sweep through the world because Joseph had saved grain for that season. They were rightly positioned for this season

People from far and near came to Egypt - to Joseph to buy food. This even gave Egypt relevance in the world at that time. Because he that controls the food source controls everything. 

This can be likened to the sudden shift in the world around the COVID-19 season when there was restriction of movement and gatherings. As an example, some churches were well positioned as they had been streaming online while others were caught unaware. Those that were already prepared and were streaming services online literally grew from national churches to global churches.

The key here is obeying God’s instructions. In many cases the instructions may not make sense at the time, but we should still obey as the one that knows the end from the beginning is best to lead the way. Our obedience is for our benefit and not just what God is asking us to do.

Genesis 42:1 -9 NIV

God is so merciful not to show us the full purpose before time. In the case of Joseph, if God had shown him the full picture when he was 19, imagine what would have happened. 

First - the bragging! The pride! 😂. He was already bragging when he just knew the tiny part of his brothers bowing to him. So imagine! how high his “shoulder pad” will have been. But the one key trait Joseph needed for the governor position was H-U-M-I-L-I-T-Y

Secondly - he wasn’t mature enough to be discreet about it. Revealing such information to his brothers would have been more catastrophic! 

Thirdly - lets not forget the weight of the vision on someone who has not been equipped for it. It will have been too much. 

Joseph could have destroyed the vision for his life by just knowing it when he was not equipped to handle it. Instead, God lovingly withheld some of the pieces until he was more mature to handle them after making several mistakes when the initial dream was revealed.

God loves us. Many of us are like Joseph - more like most of us 😂. God, in His loving mercy, is unfolding bits of the puzzle so we don’t destroy ourselves or the vision. Let us be patient. God has the best plan for us that will blow our minds away.

Genesis 42:6-17 NIV

When the brothers of Joseph appeared to buy food in Egypt, they did not recognise him. But Joseph recognised them, and tested them to see if they had changed their old ways, when envy and hatred led them to sell Joseph to the Midianites.

The brothers indeed have changed -  they were all on personal processes with God as well. Yes at one point they had let fear from the envy they felt to almost kill Joseph - but now they were on the path to becoming who God had created them to be. These men became the tribes of Israel, becoming what God had said from time about Israel.

Everyone is going through seasons with God and the results we attain will be based on how we react in those seasons. We should walk in faith and not in fear.
