Genesis 41:12 NIV

Joseph experienced highs and lows - promotions and demotions , his titles changed from - favoured of his father to slave in Egypt to head of Potiphar’s house to servant of the captain in prison to becoming the prime minister in Egypt.

Even though there were highs and lows, each position was the right title and position for him at each time. For example as the servant of the captain of the prison he was in a position where he served other prisoners which then led him to meet the Cupbearer that eventually introduced him to Pharaoh.

What if Joseph was so bugged down by titles? Moving from head of Potiphar’s house to a servant in prison would have hurt - I can just imagine. But if he was bugged by the seemingly demotion in prison and chose to be a prisoner and probably angry at the situation - how will he have served and helped the cup bearer in prison?

Titles or positions shouldn’t define us. We are children of God first.

Genesis 41:1-14 NIV

This is an important and interesting question we all need to answer...

The world is constantly changing, with each round of change bringing its own questions that require solutions that experts can no longer seem to provide. We are already seeing world leaders look to unusual places for these solutions, similar to Pharaoh, who looked to Joseph in prison for a solution after exhausting the wise counsel in the land. The key differentiator for Joseph was that the spirit of the Lord was with him.

God knows the end from the beginning; He has all the solutions to these seemingly impossible problems. And guess what? God is constantly with us. The same Holy Spirit lives in us. God can reveal the solutions to us according to His purpose and plan for us - the same way He revealed the interpretations of Pharaoh's dreams and solutions.

So I ask again. Are we preparing for the moment when the world's leaders will call? Are we diligently going through the process?
Because it is definitely coming soon...

If Joseph had shut himself out while in prison because of what he was going through, how would the cupbearer and the baker have known that he could interpret dreams? Joseph’s character and consistency were key to his breakthrough.

Genesis 40:4-14, 40:40

In difficult seasons, we tend to act in accordance with what we can see—the pain and frustrations. But it is key to remember that the testing seasons as well as the joyful seasons are all part of our growth process.

God is teach us something from those seasons.

Like Joseph, he grew in character while in those testing seasons of his life. At the end we see the difference between the Joseph in his father’s house, and the Joseph afterwards.

God can open doors for us and create opportunities, but the one thing that can keep us there, is character. Character is key for the shining. The right character and posture is extremely important as the inappropriate character can bring us down pretty fast.

So I ask - what is God teaching you in this season?

Genesis 39:2-6, 39:21-23

Today, we explore two seasons of Josephs life – the first was a fruitful season (Potiphar’s house) and the next was a dry or a testing season (prison). But even when seasons changed one thing was consistent – Joseph’s work ethic. Honestly, I admire it so much!
The testimony of Potiphar was the same testimony as the prison warden – they paid no attention to anything under his care because the Lord gave him success in everything he did. Joseph continued with a consistent work ethic in the uncomfortable prison season which the Lord made successful.

So, I ask – how do you show up in the testing season? 

Is the feedback you receive like that of the fruitful season? 

It is easier to show up when everything is rosy and great and fruitful! But in the testing season where things are hard – we can let the current situation determine how we show up.  

Let us show up notwithstanding as we go through testing so that the Lord provides us with success in all that we do.

Genesis 37:6-10, 40:8 NIV

In this journey called life we are all on a process with God and it’s only God that can judge how far we have come as He knows the end from the beginning, and except God reveals, we honestly don’t know. We don’t know the joy, blessings, transformations or even storms that lie ahead. This is why it is so dangerous to compare our progress with others as we either fall short or feel we are far ahead. The never ending list the world use as a yardstick to compare - status, wealth, position, power, even race etc all fall short as they focus on the past and now, not the future.

Take a look at Joseph - he was a prisoner one day and the next the second in command to the king of Egypt, one of the most powerful kings in the world at that time. I was on Cairo last week and just listening to the history of the land made me amazed at how powerful the Pharaohs of Egypt were in those days.

Will those that knew Joseph or Potiphar’s ever think that is possible? They probably looked at Joseph and thought - I am definitely ahead of him, he is stagnant or even declining, little did they know what joys was just ahead of him - bigger than their wildest imagination.

This is a big prayer point for most of us. May our destiny helper not forget us!

Genesis 40:12-15, 25 NIV

The destiny helper a.k.a chief cupbearer forgot Joseph. Joseph had helped him interpret a dream and when the dream came to pass the cupbearer left prison and forgot about Joseph even when Joseph asked to help him out of the prison. Smh!

Human beings forget - we all do, which is why no one can be our source - only God is our source and HE can use anyone or any situation for the fulfilment of His purpose. When the time was set, the Chief Cupbearer had to remember Joseph as there was a problem only he could solve. God is our only source and when we are ready He will use any destiny helpers or destiny helping opportunities at that time. The key thing here is readiness/ripeness because if we are not prepared/well equipped for the blessing, that same blessing can turn to a nightmare. For example, imagine Joseph was given the second in command position after his brothers sold him without the experience in Potiphar’s house and the prison? He wouldn’t have been able to handle it and would have crumbled!

I pray for that patience we need for God to prepare us for what we have been waiting for. Amen.

Follow us as we continue discussing the story of Joseph and the domestic staffs of Pharaoh, he encountered in the prison. 

Genesis 40 NIV

The life experiences of Joseph clearly show that God is the one who orchestrates the happenings in our lives. One reason why Joseph was in prison was because he needed to learn the ways of the palace - about the king, the palace, and the culture and character for the palace in Egypt. 

That prison, though uncomfortable was training ground. It was the right place for Joseph to learn these details, not Potiphar’s house or his family. God brought the specific domestic staffs at the right time to prison to teach Joseph. God is deliberate.

When God is working with us, it does not always feel comfortable or what we expect. But it is the best way for us to learn so we need to trust God and understand that everything works together for our good.

Genesis 39:7-23

Today we continue the discussion on Separation. 

Joseph went to prison from Potiphar’s house. From comfort to prison for a crime he didn’t even commit. 

It would have been painful and for for us in similar seasons. it can be so easy to be caught up with the questions

- Lord why did you allow this happen? 

Or praying back the old season - Lord please bring it back. 

But life is in seasons and there is a reason for every season instead of focusing on the pain  let’s focus on the current season, asking God the right questions like 

Lord, what are you teaching me in this season? 

For Joseph the prison was training ground for the palace - it was the prison the kings offenders, domestic staff were sent to. Many of these people will have deep knowledge about how the palace works and so there would have been opportunities for him to prepare and learn.God was separating him to bring him into fulfilment of His plans, like He is doing for us!

Today we discuss Separation. Separations can be hard - Joseph was seperated twice in the story. The first from his brothers and he was moved to Potiphar’s house and next was when he moved from  Potiphar’s house to prison. I am not quite which would have hurt him the most whether separation from family or from comfort. But it’s clear it would have been difficult.

Genesis 39:7-23

When Seperations are tough we ask - can God really be with us? . But the truth is God is always with us and is aligning everything for our own good. If you feel “separated”, whether is a relationship, work, life etc remember there is a reason for the season and it’s a training ground for what is to come just like Joseph where prison was his last training ground before he went to the palace.

Genesis 39:2-6

Verse 3: When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did…
