Paul is not talking about functions of the Spirit in someone’s personal, or individual, life. Rather, Paul is instructing the community in regards to their practice of gifts and participation of worship among a public assembly.

Often times, we want the nice package for ourselves. But, it’s not for ourselves. It’s for

someone else. Spiritual gifts are things God gives to us to minister to someone else, to edify

someone else, to uplift someone else.

Certain things or issues, especially political issues in a democratic republic, might be a big deal to me, and not to you, or vice versa. How do we remain in unity with one another in the face of a difference of opinion or conscience?

How does love serve Christ? By using our freedom, not to get what we want, but rather, to serve others with honor and humility.

Most of us have pet peeves. Issues and topics that make us tick. Things that are sensitive to us, and things we don’t care too much about. Sometimes, they are things that aren’t big deals such as momma jokes. Other times, they seem to be things that might be huge deals, such as drinking or politics.
