1. When you think about how compassion plays out in your life, do you believe you've become more or less compassionate over the years? Give an example of why you think that.

2. Read Psalm 103. What elements of compassion stand out?

3. Read Matt 20:29-34 as well as Luke 10:25-37. Discuss how Jesus exemplifies and explains compassion.

4. Read 2 Corinthians 1:1-4. How does Paul think about compassion?

5. Give some thought to the people in your life that you can extend compassion to. Who are they and what could you do to reduce their pain?

6. Pray for those people from the previous question.

2. What has caused you to be hesitant to talk to your friend or neighbor about your story of faith in Jesus? Have you had any positive or negative experiences? Explain.

3. Part 1: My Life before Jesus
What was your life like before you met Jesus?
If you grew up in church knowing about Jesus, what was your life before you got serious following Him?

4. Part 2: How I Met Jesus
How did you become a Christ-follower?
Did you go through a particularly tough time in your life that led you to God?
Did a friend invite you to a church service?
Did a family member introduce you to Jesus?
Did an experience inspire you to fully commit to following?

5. Part 3: My Life since I Met Jesus
What difference has following Jesus made in your life? How has knowing Him impacted how you walk through both the good and the hard times in life?

In the sermon we talked about the difference between religion and Christianity was DO vs. DONE. How would you explain this idea to someone who was not a person of faith?

Questions to help understand where a person is at on their faith journey:

* Do you have any kind of spiritual background?
* Do you have a belief in God? What do you think God is like? How did you come to those beliefs about God?
* Do you think you are moving toward God, away from God, or staying about the same?
* If you were to stand before God and He were to ask you, why should I let you into heaven, what would you say?

6. Reflect: What do you like or dislike about these questions? What questions would you add?

7. Romans 10:14-15, 17 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” ... Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Why would you say it is necessary to use our words to help someone understand the “good news” of the gospel? How would explain the good news to someone with no faith background? What are the things they need to understand in order to make a decision to follow Jesus?

1. What does serving someone communicate about them? What does it communicate about the one who serves? What makes a lifestyle of serving and focusing on the needs of others difficult? What keeps us from serving others?

2. Why is serving important to the mission of helping people come to know and follow Jesus?

3. Read John 13:1-17. What observations do you make about serving from this example of Jesus?

4. Why do you think Jesus chose to wash His disciples' feet the night before His crucifixion? How would you have felt if you had been there?

5. Why is it significant that God himself took on the task of the lowest slave?

6. Jesus modeled that he is willing to serve people that would betray him, deny him, and desert him. What does this teach us about who we are called to serve? Why can this be difficult? Do you think this is realistic?

7. Jesus served in proximity → those that he had personal contact with. Who are the people in your sphere of influence that you could intentionally serve? Why do you think it might be important to know HOW they need to be served? How can we learn what their real needs are?

8. Jesus served with the POWER of God. How can we access the power of God as we seek to love and serve people? How can praying for people be a tangible way to serve them? How can you know how to pray for people?

9. Jesus promises that we will be blessed if we follow his example. How have you been blessed by serving others? How have you been blessed by others serving you?

10. Who from your sphere of influence do you think God wants you to serve this week?

5. Read Colossians 3:12-14 How would you rate your character in regard to how Jesus defines the qualities his followers? What steps can you take to grow in these areas?

1. Our doubts are often disappointments in disguise. Are there any disappointments that are defining your experience?

2. Thomas was honest enough with himself and the other disciples that he was disappointed with the resurrection. Do you have a group of people you can be that vulnerable with?

3. Read and underline Matthew 28:16-17. What does it tell us about the heart of God that he put the keys to the kingdom in the shaky hands of people who were something less than certain?

4. Thomas cries out “My Lord and My God” after his interaction with the risen Jesus. Do you believe, or are you willing to believe that there is a loving God who is greater than yourself who wants to have a relationship with you?

5. Scripture shows us, in people like Thomas and Abraham, how the process of revealing both our trust and lack of trust stretches our faith. Where have you been demanding certainty (around a decision, a course of action, or a future uncertainty) where God might be using “strategic ambiguity” to grow you more?

6. What have you been taught, or assumed, that doesn’t make sense or causes you to keep your distance from God?
