Welcome to Part 2 of our series on Discernment! Today, we’re going back to the beginning and answering the question, “What does discernment mean, exactly?” Spoiler alert - it’s not just about your vocation! Discernment can cover everything from the life-changing to the mundane. We then continue our journey through the 14 Rules of Discernment of St. Ignatius. 

Last week we finished up by talking about consolation. This week, we’re talking about desolation (and yes, the Pits of Despair from Princess Bride did come up. Ready for Discernment 101? Today, we’re starting a series on how counselors, coaches, and spiritual directors can help you make decisions in your life - all through the lens of the Ignatian Rules of Discernment. And before that scares you away - Jake and Liz are John’s students in these episodes, so you’re in good company if you’re not familiar with the Rules.

What happens to coaching, counseling, or spiritual direction when you’re not in a crisis? In today’s episode, we’re discussing “ordinariness,” and what it can mean when things calm down and life is quiet. Are you healed, or just numb? If you’re healed, how can you use that peace wisely? And what would life look like if suffering never took you by surprise again?

A few tools for “ordinary times”:

• Ask yourself, “Who do I want to be the next time life gets hard?”
• Celebrate your wins, confront resistance, and ask yourself: “What am I avoiding?” 
• Stay strong and keep showing up, even when life is mundane and ordinary.

Where are you experiencing resistance? In today’s episode, we’re sharing the ways that resistance can appear in your life, and how to recognize and address it. Resistance can take many forms: it can look like stubbornness, fear, confusion, and even love! We talk about the importance of praying for the desire to do the things we feel called to do.  And of course, we talk about the importance of tears, and asking for help: sometimes, you don’t know you’re resisting something until someone else helps you see it. 

A few tips to fight resistance this week:

• Let yourself play in resistance and in acceptance: which version of you do you like more?
• Identify the root cause of your resistance, and take it to the Lord
• Don’t beat yourself up for your resistance: let yourself cry.

Calling all parents! In this episode, we talk about how counseling, coaching, and spiritual direction has affected our parenting styles, particularly when it comes to listening and awareness. We talk about keeping the spotlight on our children and recognizing what they need, and we also share a few tips on addressing the dynamic when spouses have different parenting styles. 

And finally, we explore the spiritual elements of parenting, and how God reveals Himself in the wrestling matches, the snuggles, and the suffering both we and our children go through.

It’s three weeks into the New Year, and most of us have already “failed” multiple times - or maybe we’ve given up completely. In today’s episode, Jake, Liz, and John are talking about New Year's Resolutions, and offering counseling, coaching, and spiritual direction tips on making 2024 a great year, even if it started off rocky. 

What is your vision for yourself this year? And how deeply do you believe in yourself? We share how your perception of yourself can help or hinder your goals, and ways to change your strategy if your current one isn’t working for you. At the end, we share practical tips that a counselor, a coach, and a spiritual director might offer to help you meet your goals - especially if your resolutions are causing feelings of inadequacy or desolation.
