  • Helping Ukrainian evacuees become truck drivers, released by Alberta on 15 August 2024

Helping Ukrainian evacuees become truck drivers, released by Alberta on 15 August 2024

     | Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Alberta. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
    |   Addressing the truck driver shortage in Alberta is crucial as the lack of drivers affects everything from retail goods to industrial supplies. This shortage not only hinders business operations and growth but also inflates costs for consumers and industries alike. By filling these essential positions, Alberta can help lower costs for consumers, support local businesses and ensure the smooth movement of goods across the province.

Alberta currently has a shortage of about 4,000 commercial truck drivers, which has been a factor in ongoing supply chain issues over the past few years. In response, Alberta's government has amended the eligibility criteria in the Class 1 Experience and Equivalency Program to allow Ukraine evacuees who hold or have held category CE licences to reduce the time and cost to obtain their Alberta Class 1 driver's licences.

"Allowing Ukrainian evacuees with truck driving experience to enter the commercial driving industry is a win-win. It will help alleviate the ongoing driver shortage and support evacuees from Ukraine who have had so much to deal with over the past two and a half years."

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors
Transportation and Economic Corridors will also expand the Driving Back to Work (DBTW) grant criteria to include Ukraine evacuees. As part of the implementation of the new learning pathway in 2025-26, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors will monitor driver competency to inform possible expansion of Class 1 driver licence recognition to other foreign countries to further reduce the truck driver shortage in Alberta.

PEI expands nursing roles to improve healthcare access, released by Prince Edward Island on 13 August 2024

     | Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Prince Edward Island. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
    | The Government of Prince Edward Island is introducing regulatory amendments to enhance healthcare across the province.

The changes include adding a new nursing profession, registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs), and allowing registered nurses (RNs) and RPNs who possess advanced education to apply for a special authorization to prescribe medications. These updates, effective August 10, 2024, will improve access to care, ensure Islanders' safety, and align the nursing practices in PEI with other jurisdictions.

The new regulations officially recognize RPNs as a distinct profession, making PEI the first province in Eastern Canada to recognize psychiatric nursing. RPNs are trained to care for people with mental and developmental health needs, working closely with other healthcare professionals to provide patient-centered care. They focus on mental, developmental, and physical health, as well as mental illness, and addictions. RPNs will work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, patient medical homes, and community mental health centres.

  • Enhancing the vitality of Francophone communities by welcoming French-speaking international students and immigrants, released by on 14 August 2024

Enhancing the vitality of Francophone communities by welcoming French-speaking international students and immigrants, released by on 14 August 2024

     | Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Federal News Bulletin from CIC news release. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.
     | Francophone immigration plays a crucial role in strengthening our national identity. This is why Canada is redoubling its efforts to welcome French-speaking newcomers who will enrich the linguistic, social, cultural and economic fabric of Francophone minority communities (FMCs).

Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that the new Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot (FMCSP) program will be launched on August 26, 2024, in partnership with designated French-language and bilingual post-secondary learning institutions (DLIs). Minister Miller also announced the addition of 10 communities to the Welcoming Francophone Communities (WFC) initiative. The Minister made these announcements on the occasion of the Acadian World Congress, in Nova Scotia.

Students in the Francophone Minority Communities Pilot program

Canada recognizes that large pools of French-speaking international students exist in Africa, the Middle East and the Americas, and that the study permit approval rate in these regions has been low in the past. Thanks to the new pilot program, we will make access to Canada's International Student Program fairer for a wide range of international students.

The pilot program is a flagship measure of the Policy on Francophone Immigration announced earlier this year and will benefit FMCs by helping them attract and retain international students. To improve the approval rate, students and their families will be exempted from having to demonstrate that they will leave Canada at the end of their temporary stay. In addition, the required financial threshold will be adjusted to reflect 75% of the low-income cut-off associated with the municipality where the institution's main campus is located.

Pilot program participants will also benefit from a direct pathway from temporary to permanent status after obtaining their diploma, and they will have access to settlement services while they're studying to help them integrate successfully into their communities. With their proficiency in French and their Canadian education, graduates will be able to contribute to the Canadian labour market and enrich FMCs across the country.

The new WFCs were selected after a community consensus-building process under the leadership of the Francophone Immigration Networks and the Association francophone des municipalités du Nouveau-Brunswick, supported by the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada.

The selection of each community was based on its potential to become a more welcoming and inclusive Francophone community. In other words, it has a French-speaking population and creates an environment where French-speaking newcomers to Canada feel that their identity is valued, and where they feel integrated into the host community.

With these new communities, a total of 24 WFCs across Canada will be well equipped to extend a helpful and warm welcome to French-speaking newcomers and to support their integration process in their new living environment.

By welcoming students from a diversified group of countries and accentuating cooperation with community partners to provide good service to Francophone immigrants outside Quebec, Canada is taking one more step toward the achievement of ambitious objectives in Francophone immigration for the years ahead.
