Province Receives Allocation of Over 15,000 Study Permit Applications and is One of the First in the Country to Launch an Automated Provincial Attestation Letter Processing System
The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to provide an update on the province's response to the federal government's cap on international students approved to study in Canada.
As of April 1, Saskatchewan's 2024 allocation allows for 15,054 undergraduate or college-level study permit applications, which is an increase from the original allocation of 12,000 assigned by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in February. It takes into account the province's historical acceptance rate and could result in a total of 7,200 study permits for the year.

The Rocky Mountain House Health Centre has been providing residents with health care since 1971, including surgical services. Alberta Infrastructure has completed an addition to the facility, which includes a new operating room. This will enable approximately 120 Albertans per month to receive surgery, doubling the number of monthly surgeries. This additional, brand-new operating room is also expected to decrease the wait lists for surgeries.
The expanded Rocky Mountain House Health Centre provides an additional 440 square metres (4,736 square feet) and includes:
a new operating room,
6 additional recovery beds,
a patient support area, and
an updated medical device reprocessing department.
The new spaces can be accessed from the existing site thanks to the addition of an upgraded hallway that connects the two buildings.
This latest development is of paramount importance to International and domestic health care workers contemplating immigration to Province of Alberta. It offers invaluable insights into the current landscape, enabling Healthcare workers to fine-tune their immigration approaches to effectively meet the evolving demands of the industry.

Saskatchewan Commits $400,000 to Hospitality Saskatchewan
Today, the Government of Saskatchewan announced a partnership with Hospitality Saskatchewan to address labour shortages in the hospitality industry. Through this partnership, the province is helping hospitality sector employers find the workforce they need, while also connecting Saskatchewan people to local, in-demand jobs.
The partnership provides $400,000 to Hospitality Saskatchewan to expand and strengthen workforce development initiatives in the hospitality sector by leading the development of a sector plan to recruit, settle and retain local and international workers.
The funding provided to Hospitality Saskatchewan will help develop workforce solutions tailored to the unique needs of the hospitality sector. This includes expanding and strengthening partnerships with Indigenous communities to grow the participation of Indigenous people in the tourism sector and connecting businesses to newcomer settlement supports.
By working directly with industry, the province is better positioned to provide employers with the support required to address job vacancies and promote growth in the industry.
The Government of Saskatchewan works with partners like Hospitality Saskatchewan to help address labour shortages, support newcomer settlement in Saskatchewan, and promote careers in growing industries. These targeted investments support the recently released Saskatchewan Labour Market Strategy, which outlines how the province is growing and developing the workforce to meet employer demand and ensure Saskatchewan people benefit from the province's growing economy.

Rural communities across Alberta are facing a shortage of physicians, forcing rural Albertans to travel long distances to seek medical care. The government is working with post-secondary institutions to train more physicians in rural areas because students who learn in rural communities are more likely to stay and work in them after completing their training.
Alberta's government is supporting collaborative efforts from the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge and Northwestern Polytechnic to develop new Rural Medical Education Program Training Centres in Lethbridge and Grande Prairie. The University of Calgary will partner with the University of Lethbridge to develop the new training centre in Lethbridge, and the University of Alberta will partner with Northwestern Polytechnic to develop the new training centre in Grande Prairie.

Law enforcement, stakeholders, federal immigration authorities and provinces and territories are reporting an increase in immigration fraud volume and sophistication, which can negatively affect people hoping to make Alberta their home.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program has existing anti-fraud mechanisms in place and the government is adding extra measures to protect newcomers. The expanded anti-fraud measures will include fraud detection, specialized investigation expertise, and strengthening job-offer eligibility and validation thresholds to increase protections for immigrants and better safeguard positive economic immigration outcomes.
In addition to these new measures, Alberta's government will continue to work across ministries, and with other provinces and territories and the federal government to address immigration fraud.

The provincial and federal governments have signed two bilateral agreements aimed at improving access to health and long-term care services.
The federal government will provide more than $430 million to the provincial government over 10 years.
Through the health-related agreement, entitled Working Together, the federal government will provide more than $313 million to support New Brunswick's three-year action plan to improve its health-care system.
Progress on these initiatives and broader commitments will be measured against targets, with annual reports to be provided by the provincial government.
As well, the two levels of government will work to improve how health information is collected, shared, used and reported; streamline foreign credential recognition for internationally educated health professionals; facilitate the mobility of key health professionals within Canada; and fulfil shared responsibilities to uphold the Canada Health Act to protect access to health care based on need, not the ability to pay.
This funding will focus on many elements of the provincial health plan, including the mental health and addictions pillars.
Through the Aging With Dignity agreement, the federal government will provide nearly $117 million to support New Brunswick's five-year action plan to help residents age with dignity close to home, with access to home care or care in a safe long-term care facility.
The recent announcement holds crucial implications for Healthcare professionals contemplating a move to New Brunswick. By providing insights into the existing opportunities, it equips Healthcare with the necessary information to adapt their immigration strategies in anticipation of the sector's evolving demands.

The Government of Saskatchewan is investing an additional $160,000 for a total of nearly $358,000 in operational funding for the Lloydminster Interval Home Society (LIHS) in 2023-24.
"This money will be used to fund critical services and supports for survivors of domestic violence in Lloydminster and the surrounding region through the Lloydminster Interval Home Society's safe shelter program," Lloydminster MLA Colleen Young said on behalf of Justice Minister and Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre. "We are deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication the Society's staff and volunteers put into ensuring these critical supports are available for women and children leaving interpersonal violence and abuse."
The LIHS operates a 24-hour domestic violence emergency safe shelter with 33 beds for women and their children fleeing situations of interpersonal violence and abuse. This transition house offers increased access to safe shelter and wrap-around supports for women, with a focus on crisis services to ensure their immediate safety.
In addition to the safe shelter program, the LIHS provides crisis intervention, clinical counseling, safety planning, childcare, transportation, public education and advocacy.
In 2022-23, the LIHS supported over 300 women and children leaving circumstances of violence and abuse. Since they began operating in 1980, the LIHS has provided emergency shelter to nearly 6,800 women and 8,400 children.

Every senior in Canada deserves to age in dignity, safety, and comfort, regardless of where they live. That is why the Government of Canada is investing close to $200 billion over 10 years, which includes $5.4 billion for tailored bilateral agreements with provinces and territories on Aging with Dignity.
Through the Aging with Dignity agreement, federal funding will support Prince Edward Island's five-year action plan to improve health care for seniors. The plan will:
Increase access to home care services, including palliative care
Build a Hospital-at-Home service that brings licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and paramedics together to provide acute care services at home. This service is expected to help meet the needs of up to 1,450 seniors through interventions like advanced wound care; and
Increase the number of palliative home care coordinators working within PEI's home care program to improve access to palliative care services in the community, reduce hospitalizations, and enhance end-of-life care for clients and their families.
Close quality and safety gaps in the long-term care sector
Hire additional health providers, like occupational, physical, and recreational therapists to provide services in private long-term care homes to improve the wellness and quality-of-life of residents;
Expand the implementation of InterRAI, a digital platform used to assess individuals health needs, to 10 private long-term care facilities to inform care planning and quality improvement across the long-term care sector in PEI;
Increase long-term care bed capacity and enable the provision of long-term care services to residents in more places, including rural communities, while facilitating comparable infection prevention and control; and
Launch mobile X-ray units across the long-term care sector to provide timely access to care and reduce the demand on patients transfers between care settings.
Progress on these initiatives and broader commitments will be measured against targets which Prince Edward Island will publicly report on annually.
Through this new agreement and the Working Together agreement signed in December 2023, Prince Edward Island will improve how health information is collected, shared, used and reported to Canadians; streamline foreign credential recognition for internationally educated health professionals; and facilitate the mobility of key health professionals within Canada; and fulfill shared responsibilities to uphold the Canada Health Act to protect Canadians' access to health care that is based on need, not the ability to pay.
