  • New Initiatives to Enhance Utilization of Nurse Practitioners, released by Saskatchewan on 12 March 2024

Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Saskatchewan. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.

Premier Scott Moe and Health Minister Everett Hindley joined MLA Terry Jenson in Warman today to announce new initiatives to enhance and expand utilization of Nurse Practitioners throughout the health care system.

To enhance the role of Nurse Practitioners, the Ministry of Health will work to pilot a new model for independently operated, publicly funded Nurse Practitioner clinics. These clinics will improve access to primary health care by providing a new avenue for patients to seek care.

"Access to primary health care is a high priority for our government," Moe said. "By creating more opportunities for Nurse Practitioners throughout the health care system, we can improve access to primary health care services for Saskatchewan patients and their families."

Additionally, the Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) will explore further opportunities to expand the areas of service for Nurse Practitioners, including in settings other than primary health care.

To improve access to primary health care in rural, regional, and northern communities, 25 new Nurse Practitioner positions will be created over the next year under the SHA, including in SHA clinics and as part of primary health care teams.

"Our Health Human Resources Action Plan is showing success in a number of rural, regional, and northern communities," Hindley said. "We are grateful to the Nurse Practitioners who have been part of this success, and we are pleased to be creating more opportunities for Nurse Practitioners across our province."

The ministry will work collaboratively with the SHA, the Saskatchewan Association of Nurse Practitioners and other primary care stakeholders toward implementing these initiatives.

  • The right care when and where Albertans need it, released by Alberta on 14 March 2024

Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Alberta. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.

On average, there are about 1,500 Albertans who have finished their required hospital care and are waiting in hospital beds until they can be moved to a more appropriate setting, such as a continuing care space or community care services. This represents almost 18 per cent of all acute care spaces in the province, and Albertans in these situations are known as alternate level of care (ALC) patients. Since December, Alberta's government has been able to reduce the number of ALC patients specifically waiting for transfer to a continuing care facility by almost 30 per cent.

Moving these patients sooner frees up space in hospitals and helps ensure that Albertans waiting in emergency departments for in-patient beds and those waiting for surgery can get the care they need. Almost half of ALC patients are transferred to more appropriate care settings outside the hospital within seven days and the majority are transferred within 25 days. However, there are many patients who are experiencing delays and staying in hospitals much longer than required.

Alberta's government is committed to improving access to the province's publicly funded health care system. If passed, Budget 2024 honours the province's commitment of $1 billion over three years to transform continuing care in Alberta. The second year of this funding would continue to support efforts related to increasing care in the community, enhancing workforce capacity, improving quality, and increasing choice and innovation.

In addition, the province has allocated $654 million in funding over three years for the Continuing Care Capital Program to improve access to continuing care spaces for Albertans, including those who no longer need to stay at a hospital but require further support. This funding will also support efforts to reduce emergency department wait times by freeing up more beds and making sure Albertans are getting the right supports in the appropriate setting. Alberta's government is creating additional spaces in priority communities, including delivering culturally appropriate care for Indigenous residents on and off reserves and Metis Settlements.

    Work by these departments includes:

Tactical teams, including members from each department, that are focused on removing barriers and providing supports for patients facing specific personal challenges obtaining care in an appropriate setting.
A Specialized Patient Flow Improvement Team that is reviewing hospital patient flow and processes from hospital admission to discharge to find improvements.
Home care providers that collaborate to get patients back to their homes sooner by customizing services and supports to safely meet patient needs for as long as possible.
At the same, time, temporary continuing care spaces are being created for patients awaiting an assessment and transfer to continuing care. These new spaces will free up hospital beds and reduce emergency room and surgery wait times. An additional 150 temporary spaces have been created in the province over the past five months and by early 2025, a total of 1,050 additional spaces will be operational.

Budget 2024 is a responsible plan to strengthen health care and education, build safe and supportive communities, manage the province's resources wisely and promote job creation to continue to build Alberta's competitive advantage.
This latest development is of paramount importance to Job Titles as listed earlier contemplating immigration to Alberta. It offers invaluable insights into the current landscape, enabling this set of

  • Seniors' advocate calls for urgent action in long-term care report, released by New Brunswick on 13 March 2024

Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of New Brunswick. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.

The province's long-term care system needs urgent action if New Brunswickers are going to feel safe relying upon it, according to a new report from Child, Youth and Seniors' Advocate Kelly Lamrock.

In What We All Want, a review of the province's long-term care system, Lamrock identified seven areas for immediate government action:

    ● Fixing a broken and disjointed needs-assessment system so that families get the right help.

    ● Better integrating different types of care so that patients move easily through the system.

    ● Holding the system accountable and ensuring that patients and their families are heard.

    ● Improving human resources planning and retaining staff at all levels of care.

    ● Ensuring that the system is better funded and less bureaucratic to ensure quality care.

    ● Providing better and more accessible supports to support care in people's homes.

    ● Supporting the unique needs of people with disabilities and planning for the future.

The report offers recommendations to improve the system, including:

    ● Establishing one financial assessment so that families do not have to repeat intake every time a patient's care needs change.

    ● Increasing funding for inspections, increasing the use of unplanned inspections and establishing a provincial offence for reprisals against whistleblowers.

    ● Developing a separate process for needs assessment and financial support so that patients' needs are not shortchanged for financial reasons.

    ● Modernizing support programs for people with disabilities and setting hard targets to move people with disabilities out of overly institutional care.

    ● Improving incentives for aging at home through better respite care for family caregivers, expanding eligibility for home support programs and establishing a caregivers' network.

    ● Improving recruitment and retention of front-line staff by offering better training and higher wages, and harmonizing wages for workers in different areas of long-term care.

    ● Decentralizing the powers of the Department of Social Development in program delivery to community-based governing bodies who oversee the full continuum of care, while preserving the department's role in setting standards, reporting results and equalizing funding.

    ● Improving reporting of key performance indicators and establishing a process to investigate variations in outcomes between regions and facilities.

    ● Providing mandatory and ongoing training for board members, managers, inspectors and social workers in areas which impact patients most.

    ● Making the system more affordable by regulating core services and extra charges, capping daily contributions and establishing a transparent, public process for setting rates and funding.

    ● Providing more flexible definitions of levels of care to allow for a more responsive system.

For Health Care professionals exploring the possibility of immigrating to New Brunswick, this announcement carries significant weight. It offers valuable insights into the prevailing landscape of their sector, empowering Medical Professionals to tailor their immigration plans in accordance with the evolving needs of the industry.
