  • Episode 131 - Paging The Premier Edmonton Sports Podcast
After a brief weather related hiatus, we're back with a vengeance (and not just aimed towards a certain Edmonton sports franchise)! We kick off this week with a look at how the BC Lions did in CFL free agency. They made a big splash, but it is enough to push the team to championship contention? More importantly, is it enough to make people care about the team and show up to games? We also talk a little baseball, as spring training has kicked off, with one of the marquee free agents finally signing. What does it mean for other free agents, and the state of labour in baseball in general?
The NHL trade deadline is approaching, and we look at what the Canucks may or may not do. Should they be looking to buy or sell? Can the team ever stay healthy for more than one game? How will the experience of meaningful games down the stretch shape the team going forward? What about the rest of the league? Will Ottawa clean house? Which teams will overpay in desperate attempts to bulk up? All this plus our usual best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 130 - Paging...Poutine?
If you were disappointed by the SuperBowl, then we have the cure for what ails you - Brendan being kicked out of the country for never having tried poutine. If that isn't enough to cheer you up, it's also another episode of Just A Bit Outside!
We look back at one of the least memorable SuperBowls ever, and the halftime "show" didn't help. Was it a bad game, or a great defensive battle that just lacked excitement? There is no debate that Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in the history of the the NFL, but what was the deal with Todd Gurley? We also have some way too soon predictions for next years championship game.
In hockey, the Canucks resumed their season after the All Star break with a four game road trip. Are they marching towards the playoffs, or will injuries derail their surprising push? We discuss the lack of organizational depth at key positions, and what that could mean down the stretch and at the draft for the Canucks cartel. We also discuss the ongoings of two other Canadian teams heading in two very opposite directions. Is there a fix for the Oilers, or is this an organization culture issue? Have the Leafs backed themselves into a corner, or is this their year? All this plus our best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 129 - Paging Kevin Bieksa
Ever wonder if you've found your true calling in life? Kevin Bieksa doesn't have to wonder, not after he found his doing hockey commentary. If you're still searching for yours, search while listening to the premier Vancouver sports podcast!
It's SuperBowl preview time, as we look forward to the Rams and Patriots. Will Brady and Belichick win a sixth ring, or can McVay and Goff start their own dynasty? Only if McVay is kept out of harms way (luckily he has a guy for that). We also recap the Australian Open and the strides of a rising young Canadian player.
The All Star break marks the unofficial start of the NHL stretch drive, and we look forward to a meaningful run of games for the Canucks. Will they make the playoffs? Is it in their best interests? What assets may be in play as we approach the trade deadline? We check out the other wheelings and dealings around the league, including some surprises and disappointments. All this plus our best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 128 - Paging Johnnie Cochran
If you need a lawyer, you call in the best. We miss you Johnnie Cochran, as the NFL needs you to defend it against a Louisiana lawsuit to restart the NFC Championship Game. Why is there a lawsuit you ask? Because of poor officiating? Fans taking things too far? A half wit lawyer trying to make a name for themselves? You can decide.
We start this week with a review of the NFC and AFC Championships, both full of drama and surprises and referees. It's the Rams and Patriots (surprise) in the SuperBowl. Do they deserve to be there? Would anyone bet against New England at this point? We also tip our caps to the 2019 Baseball Hall of Fame class, including Seattle slugger Edgar Martinez and the late Roy Halladay. We may give some shit to the voters for their first ever(?!) unanimous choice for the hall.
The Canucks are in unfamiliar waters approaching the All Star Weekend, playing meaningful playoff race games for the first time in four years. How this this impact the approach to the trade deadline? Are the Canucks cooking up something big for when they host the draft this June? How are the prospects doing in Utica? All this and more, plus our best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 127 - And We're Back!
Did you miss us? Geoff returns from his month long odyssey, and it's time we catch up on the wide world of sports. We're down to the final four of the NFL season, and we review the playoffs thus far, plus an end of year look at the Seahawks. Did they overachieve, or is this team better than most people gave credit for? We make our NFC and AFC championship predictions too - who do you think will make it to the SuperBowl?
Being the middle of winter, lots of hockey to talk about. We give a quick shout to the World Junior Championships before diving into all things Canucks. How have they been up to the midpoint? Are they legitimate playoff contenders? What's been going on with Utica? All this plus our best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 126 - For Whom The Bell Dings
Whom does the bell ding for? Athletes who assault people? Corrupt organizations? An early 90's TV show reference? Maybe all of the above. We start this week with the Kareem Hunt saga, casting a wider look on the failures that lead to such actions. Is there one cause, or are we all to blame?
Hockey talk leads Brendan to rant against the lack of patience being displayed with certain Canucks prospects. Do fans need to adjust expectations and attitudes? Are players successes tied to where they develop and the people developing them? How will the Canucks fare after making some roster adjustments? Should we really be sweating the recent losing streak, or is this just part of the process back to relevance?
Lots of Seattle talk in this show too, with the city being awarded an NHL franchise. Bets on team name? We talk some Seahawks, who now firmly control their playoff destiny. Is this team a legitimate threat to compete with the big dogs of the NFC? How about the Texans? Are they ready to take down the giants of the AFC? All this plus some Mariners talk and more in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 125 - No Mic No Problem
You'd think after 124 shows we would know what we're doing, but even the best of us make mistakes. Luckily we still know what we are talking about. We kick off this week with a look back at an underwhelming Grey Cup game. Calgary finally broke through, but did the field conditions play a role in that? Is that acceptable for a championship game? We also discuss the Seahawks huge win (plus the help they got). Is Seattle in control of their destiny? Are the playoffs now a legitimate goal?
Hockey talk dominates our show though. The Canucks finally broke their losing streak against the Kings and old coach Willie Desjardins, which stems discussion on coaching styles. Would Willie D still be a good fit here, or is his system resulting in poor hockey? What role does style play in player development? All this plus the other wheelings and dealings from around the NHL, as well as our usual best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 124 - What? What?
It was billed as the best game of the year, and it didn't disappoint. Speaking of things that don't disappoint, it's another episode of Just A Bit Outside! But before we get to that game...
The Canucks are at the quarter pole, and we reflect on the season so far. What have been the surprises? Have there been any disappointments? What will the team look like if they ever get healthy? We also have a look around the NHL, including all the coaching changes. Is anybody safe?
The Monday Night Football game was one for the ages. We break down the weird stats that came from it, as well as the rest of the games of the week. Did the Seahawks big win give them life, or do they need a bunch of help? We also review the CFL playoffs and the road to the Grey Cup. Will Calgary finally win, or will they choke again? We even talk baseball - are the Mariners embarking on a rebuild? All this plus our best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 123 - Democracy Is Serious Business
Here at Just A Bit Outside, we take many things seriously (except ourselves), and unless you're part of the hoity-toity crowd, you appreciate that level of sass.
If you're looking for Canucks talk, you've found it. This week we break down the Canucks second major road trip of the season, and if the results are expected or not. Are the Canucks a playoff team? We also look at how certain players have fared, and if some of them will still be here next season.
The BC Lions season came to a crashing halt this weekend in Hamilton with a disastrous performance. What is ahead for the team with the departure of Wally Buono and lots of players due for free agency? Can the Lions find there way back to relevance and respectability? We also review the past week in the NFL, which saw the Seahawks compete with the big dogs but come up short? Are the playoffs a pipe dream for Seattle? All this plus our best and worst in Garbage Time!

  • Episode 122 - Well...
Something historically good is happening in Vancouver, and it's not just another episode of Just A Bit Outside. Petey-mania is sweeping the city, with the Canucks rookie drawing comparisons to some all-time greats. Is he a generational player, or is it just a buzz word? We look at what the Canucks have done so far this year, and what may be in store for their second long eastern road trip. Are all the young guys stepping up, or should some be in Utica (or maybe another option)?
It's playoff time in the CFL, and we look at the BC Lions path to the Eastern Final. Yes, only in the CFL could a team from Vancouver play for an Eastern title. Can they bounce back from two lackluster outings to beat Hamilton? Is Travis Lulay still the guy to push this team forward, or is this the final game of the illustrious career of Wally Buono?
The Seahawks stumbled this past week at home against the Chargers. Did they beat themselves, or did some guys in stripes lend a hand? Can they recover to still fight for a playoff spot, or is the uphill climb too much? It's halfway through the season, and both the NFC and AFC are wide open for the taking. All this and more, including our usual best and worst in Garbage Time!
