If you wanted to get started with herbal medicine, or growing medicinal plants, it is not difficult.  You probably have some of these plants already growing in your garden.  You would be surprised by some of the medicinal properties of the common herbs that most gardeners have.  Here is a list of some of my favorite medicinal plants to grow in any garden.  Hopefully, this information gets you interested in growing your medicinal garden or even just adding a few of these plants to your garden.  Before you begin your garden, know that some of these plants can spread quickly throughout the planting area.

I love community gardens for many different reasons.  They are great places for link-minded individuals to meet and learn about gardening.  Also they have the potential to address food insecurity issues if placed in a proper location and ran properly.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the interest in houseplants has skyrocketed. Everyone wants to become a plant parent. But sometimes, people don't know which plants are the best to begin their journey.  Don't worry, I have you covered. 

In this episode, we discuss the 5 easiest houseplants for beginners.

Spent mushroom substrate is gold.  If you can get your hands on some you should.  This substrate is a blend of natural products that work wonders on a garden.  There are still nutrients in this substrate even though it is being thrown away.  What’s funny is most urban mushroom farmers do not have the necessary space to properly compost the spent mushroom blocks and are looking to get rid of them. They will often give it to you for free.  It’s crazy you’re doing them a favor by taking it.

What is urban agriculture or urban gardening? When you look online you see definitions that say urban gardening is the practice of growing plants or farming or cultivating processing and distributing food in or around urban areas. That seems all-encompassing.

When I think of urban gardening, I think of growing food in limited spaces in areas of cities that are developing at an extremely high rate. Every time I look around, people are building more homes in the cities. And while I love farming on a larger scale, I think urban agriculture can play an important part in the growth of cities.

There are many different ways to apply fertilizer and amendments to the soil, and one of the easiest and most effective ways is simply topdressing the soil with your fertilizer or amendment.

Do you know what is in your soil? Not the generic answer: Earthworms, water, sand, silt, clay. I am talking about the specific amounts of each nutrient. The microbiological life that is teaming or suffering within the soil?   Without a soil test, it is impossible to know these answers.

A soil test provides precise and accurate measures of the essential nutrients- nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium—the state of the soil, including the soil pH.

For a garden to thrive, it needs a combination of vital nutrients. The quantity of nutrients the plants require to thrive determine which category they fall into; Macronutrients, Secondary, and micronutrients. Macronutrients are needed in the most significant amounts, and they are also the nutrients notated on the front of the package. The secondary nutrients are vital but required in smaller quantities than the macronutrients. These secondary nutrients are calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. All these nutrients play a different role, but they all seem to share one common trait; they are easily leached from the soil.
