In this episode, declassified FBI memos reveal that beginning in 2017, an HPSCI staffer and career intelligence officer alerted the FBI and DOJ OIG to one or more schemes directed by then-Rep. Adam Schiff to leak classified information to media in order to smear, “indict,” and “topple” the Trump Administration. This whistleblower met with authorities at least five times between 2017 and 2023, but charges were not brought against Schiff or anyone else involved in the scheme.
Might that be about to change? The statute of limitations has run out on the singular act of leaking in 2017, but since this involved several (eight or more) people engaging in a coordinated effort, it could be seen by an intrepid prosecutor as, perhaps, a grand conspiracy to weaponize intelligence and law enforcement institutions against a President and his administration. The statute of limitations on something like this has barely begun to tick.
Also, the judge overseeing the Maxwell case has denied DOJ’s bid to unseal the grand jury material. This, of course, has made people on both extremes of the political spectrum very upset. But should they be? No, and even if the judge were able to grant the request, which by law he cannot, would we learn anything new? No, we wouldn’t, and revealing that may be the entire point of the unsealing effort.
