  • AI in podcasting (the tip of a colossal iceburg): a Buckers & Katie yap

Come on, pull up a pew, it’s time for another sermon episode from us, your friendly neighbourhood purveyors of all things podcasts, Buckers and Katie.

This week we thought we’d take on a nice, simple, tie it up with a bow in a neat 45 mins type of topic. You guessed it, we’re taking on AI in podcasting. Some might call it a doom spiral, we’re calling it a podcast episode.

    In this episode you’ll hear:

    • The podcast series that triggered Katie’s AI related ‘panic whirlpool’
    • Why we think authenticity is so valuable in the AI age
    • A frank discussion about the ethical implications of AI usage and where our comfort levels lie
    • Buckers’ recent experience with a podcast guest who discovered a favourite podcast was AI-generated and the interesting response to the revelation
    • A discussion of our discomfort with media created solely by generative AI
    • How and where we can communicate the ways we use AI with honesty and integrity
    • The gritted-teeth concessions that we’re absolutely open to the possibility that we might be wrong… occasionally
    • Where podcasts sit in the Venn diagram of art, entertainment, and journalism
    • Why we love making things by hand and how that might just be the antidote to AI

We don't mind if you're a ChatGPT convert or an AI agnostic (an AI-theist if you will), or maybe you're still working it out like us - regardless, we hope you’ll find some food for thought in our chinwag. Of course, the subject is far more nuanced and complicated than we could unpick in one podcast episode, and there are lots of elements of the wider conversation we didn’t have time to get into, but watch this space and do send us your questions - AI related and beyond - ahead of series 2!

We would love to know what you think, so drop us a comment on social media and keep the convo going!

But for now, BRING ON THE BANJOS!

    Enjoy!

    Buckers & Katie x

  • Reviewing our recent listens and all-time faves: a yap with Buckers & Katie

“Once you're in, you're in. And then it feels like they're yours.”

Come sit down with us as we chat about the podcasts we’re loving right now, new found faves along with pods we’ve loved for years. What are we listening to whilst we’re doing the weekly shop, the washing up, or crocheting on the sofa?

On this week’s episode we’re going it alone with no more of a plan beyond having a natter about the podcasts we LOVE (and crafting. Lots and lots of crafting) - and what keeps us coming back to them.

We might have pretty different tastes in the shows we subscribe to, but the things that draw us in are remarkably similar - chemistry and relationships between hosts and guests are essential features for us. While Katie is all about a great story, Buckers loves listening to an engaging interview, no matter who the guest is.

    In this episode you'll hear:
    • The podcasts we can’t get enough of, and why.
    • An extensive insight into the creative pursuits of two women in their mid-thirties.
    • Pairing different audio genres with various daily life activities
    • Why Katie's gateway drug into podcasting was true crime.
    • Katie's longstanding relationship with My Favorite Murder and why the chemistry between the hosts matters just as much as the stories they're telling
    • Why Buckers increasingly finds herself listening to podcasts for the interviewer, as much as the person being interviewed
    • Why the things that make us love a podcast are rarely the things you think YOU need to care about.
    • The difference between a podcast having thought behind it and a podcast being rigidly structured
    • Why even a business podcast is still allowed to be entertaining.
    • New faves:The News Agents, courtesy of Leila's a-pod-calypse recommendations
    • An altercation with a candle.

Turns out the podcasts we love have an element of messiness and realness that creates the sense of intimacy which makes this medium so delicious.

So, yes, when you tune into an episode of Just Make The Bloody Podcast, you’re going to hear unscripted conversations, at least one long pause while one of us searches for a word that’s exited our brains entirely, tangents that seem to come out of thin air, and wheeze laughing that would make Muttley proud as we momentarily detour off course for a quick squizz down memory lane…

But we’re inviting you in to share all of that with us because isn’t that the point? Shouldn’t our podcasts act as a portal for us and our listeners to enter eachother’s worlds? Have a collective ‘Come Dine With Me’ style rummage around in eachothers cupboards? An hour ot so to be connected with people we’ve never met, yet somehow… we sort of.. have..?

IT’S GETTING TOO DEEP… BRING ON THE BANJOS!

    Enjoy!

  • What can psychology tell us about podcasting? Being curious with Leila Ainge
“Podcasting is where curiosity goes” - Leila Ainge

Welcome back to JMTBP, where in this episode we’re asking: what can we learn about podcasting from the world of psychology? What is it that makes audio just so flippin’ delicious?

Leila Ainge brings a heck of a lot to the table, including her podcast ‘Psychologically Speaking,’ first launched as a way of disseminating her masters research on Imposter Phenomenon. Leila’s podcast has since evolved and she’s published episodes on a range of topics, some featuring guests, some solo, often of varying length and format but always fascinating! Leila’s brilliant brain makes connections between unexpected things so don't be surprised if you finish this episode with a bunch of new ideas that suddenly seem very important that you get to work on immediately…

Leila encourages us to view our podcasts as an ‘invitation’ to our audience - a space to allow their own ideas to evolve alongside the conversations we’re sharing with them. This episode really gives you permission to step away from the rule book, and a reminder that a podcast does not require you to churn out 30 minute polished to perfection sales pitches week after week. That you can just be curious, have interesting conversations, share the things you're learning, change your mind, experiment and.. err.. bloody well enjoy yourself?

    In this episode you’ll hear:

    • How Leila’s podcast has evolved into a hub for psychological insights and whatever is peaking her curiosity at the time
    • Leila’s expertise (and own experiences with) imposter phenomenon
    • Why podcasting might actually be one of the gentler ways to practise being visible
    • The difference between selling what you do and showing people who you are
    • What Leila has learnt from listening back to old episodes
    • Why your podcast does NOT have to be the same length, format or level of polished every single week (lucky for us!)
    • The reality of consistency when you're running a business without an enormous team behind you
    • Why your download numbers don't always tell you whether something was valuable
    • Knowing when a guest simply isn't right for your podcast — and why it's okay not to publish everything you record
    • Why podcasts will become even MORE important in a world increasingly full of AI-generated guff.
    • Why we connect with podcasts and audio on such a deep level
    • How to psychologically prepare for recording your podcast
    • The one podcast Leila would save in an apod-calypse… and more on her fave podcasts and why
    • A 10 out of 10 irrelevant architecture podcast pitch from a man called Romeo

    Enjoy!

  • Turning up the dials in your confidence cockpit, with Nicky Denson-Elliott

“I think women are allowed to fail.” - Nicky Nicky Denson-Elliott

This episode is going to change your entire perspective on failure, confidence, and maybe whether or not you should finally launch that podcast… meet Nicky Denson-Elliott - host of award winning podcast, Women’s Business. This episode is one to really sit back and drink in all the knowledge and inspiration she brings to this episode of JMTBP (in absolute bucket loads). Nicky is a well-established and much loved member of the decibelle Creative family and editing her conversations is definitely a highlight of our production schedule! Not normally one for waffle she puts in a solid shift and humours us for a good hour or so, and we’re so grateful because the result is a rich, funny, nuanced and sparky conversation about podcasting, creativity, success, feminism, failure, confidence and - surprise surprise - *v i s i b i l i t y*.

    STRAP IN.

Most people who launch a business podcast do so to help promote an already existing business. But for Nicky it happened the other way around: launching Women’s Business led her to starting an entire business and community that wouldn’t exist without it. Nicky is a self-described professional feminist, founder, writer and creator of The Wilder Collective, a community for female founders. She also happens to be someone who gets an idea, and despite no idea how to do it (yet)... will proceed to make it happen anyway (if it’s the ‘right’ idea, that is - she tells us how to weed out the dross and identify the idea that sticks).

    In this episode you’ll hear:

    • Why Nicky wants more female founders’ stories to be heard
    • How Nicky’s podcast became the foundation of an entre business
    • Why success doesn’t always have to be measured financially
    • Nicky’s failure reframe: failure is just data (and why failure is a feminist issue)
    • That confidence isn’t a personality type: how to turn up the dials on your “confidence dashboard” (and in particular the confidence dials to twiddle if we want to start a podcast)
    • Taking your idea seriously
    • How Nicky approaches interviewing
    • How to monetise a podcast without waiting for a giant brand to magically discover you
    • How podcast sponsorship has become part of Nicky’s wider business model
    • The ideas that disappear vs. the ones that stick
    • Waffle.

If you take one thing away from this chat let it be Nicky’s refusal to treat the things that haven’t worked as evidence that she shouldn’t have bothered trying. You don't need to know exactly where your idea is going or that it will be “successful”, you just have to back yourself and take it seriously enough to get the data from trying.

    Enjoy!

    Buckers & Katie x

    Nicky Denson-Elliott

Nicky Denson-Elliott is a podcaster, writer, founder and self-described professional feminist. She is the host of the award-winning podcast Women’s Business, where she speaks to women about their careers, businesses and the realities behind building them.

The conversations she began through the podcast ultimately led Nicky to create her paid community for feminist founders, The Wilder Collective as well as live networking events and Wilder Live. Her work also includes writing on feminist issues and her ongoing Confidence Project, exploring the different factors that shape women’s confidence.

You can find Nicky via her website and Instagram, and you should definitely listen to her award winning podcast Women’s Business (Buckers recommends making a beeline for episode #95: Good Girl Economics Explored: Pricing, Perceptions and Profit for female founders, which features research co-author, Leila Ainge).

  • Finding the joy in podcasting for a niche market, with Ayo Abbas

"This is my podcast and I need to enjoy doing it." — Ayo Abbas

This week we're so excited to be joined by the wonderful, Ayo Abbas, marketing consultant and host of The Built Environment Marketing Show. This podcast might seem extraordinarily niche on the surface, being dedicated to marketing within the built environment (it’s honestly far more fascinating than it sounds), but it is also a must-listen for anyone in any area of marketing.

Ayo launched her podcast back in the sourdough-making, Netflix-rinsing, hazy days of lockdown, taught herself how to produce like a pro, and has since clocked up more than 100 episodes. So naturally, we wanted to know what six years of consistently making a podcast has taught her, and more importantly, what she can teach us!

We talk about the value of knowing EXACTLY who your podcast is for, especially when you’re operating in a small niche, plus how Ayo has turned her podcast into an integral part of her wider business and content strategy. She shares how episodes generate client enquiries, why she mixes things up with guest interviews and solo episodes, and introduces us to the glorious concept of the marketing wheel - prepare for some lightbulb-moment level excitement.

We also get reassuringly candid about the actual reality of producing a podcast consistently. Spoiler: even after 100+ episodes, Ayo is sometimes still sorting the show notes the night before publication - we’re in good company then.

    In this episode:
    • How podcasts became Ayo's friends during lonely night feeds, years before she ever considered making one herself
    • Why she launched an incredibly niche podcast in the middle of lockdown (and how she taught herself to do it)
    • Why Ayo recommends alternating guest interviews with solo episodes
    • Why scripting every word can actually make recording a solo episode HARDER
    • The joy of making the podcast you actually want to make rather than planning six months of content you'll inevitably get bored of
    • How one email became a podcast episode within 24 hours
    • Ayo's marketing wheel and how one podcast episode can fuel your newsletters, blogs, social content and more
    • The reality of being a little bit "hand to mouth" with podcast production, even when you've been doing it for years
    • Why decent audio matters more now than it did when we all started podcasting
    • How to use your podcast to attract clients without turning every episode into a sales pitch
    • The podcast metrics actually worth paying attention to (and why Ayo is unapologetically obsessed with her analytics)
    • Why you probably need to promote your podcast MUCH more than you think
    • Video clips aren't everything when it comes to podcast promo: why different people need different types of content
    • How making a podcast forces you to get your "cognitive ducks in a row"
    • Why sometimes you need to stop tinkering and JUST GET THE BLOODY THING OUT THERE.
    • Springs.
    • A cat's bumhole.
    • Ayo's unexpectedmusical talent...

And if there's one particularly reassuring thing we took away from this conversation, it's that there really isn't a magical point where you suddenly become a Perfect Organised Podcaster™.

Ayo has been doing this for six years and has built a successful, established podcast in an extremely niche corner of the internet, but that doesn’t mean she feels like she’s the finished product. She's still experimenting, following ideas when they excite her, occasionally finishing things at the last minute and figuring stuff out as she goes.

Maybe that's not something we need to "get better at" after all. Maybe that's just podcasting...

    Enjoy!

    Buckers & Katie x

  • "Podcasting is the elite level of visibility." with Samantha Harman
"I'm taking down the patriarchy one great pair of shoes at a time." - Samantha Harman

We’re chatting to the brilliant Samantha Harman - stylist, author, confidence champion, podcast host, and a woman who isn't just "too much," she is infact ‘past the point of much’ (her own words!).

The kind of conversation Samantha brings to the party is one that starts off about clothes but very quickly becomes about why the patriarchy must be destroyed. This episode is no different, so settle in for a conversation about identity, visibility, feminism, confidence, and why a podcast is the answer to ALL OF IT (probably).

Samantha hosts ‘Just Get Dressed’ - a podcast about style, but let it be known: this is not your basic chat about capsule wardrobes and whether you’re a summer or a winter. Samantha brings her signature style and confidence to her listeners who may come for the leopard print but they stay for the psychology, the patriarchy-smashing, and the levelled up style and confidence. Samantha brings it all to JMTBP and we also chuck in a healthy dollop of chat about podcasting, social media, and ‘authenticity’ (what does it *actually* look like?)

Samantha also shares how podcasting has transformed her business, why long-form conversations build trust in a way social media could never, and why she believes podcasts are one of the most powerful ways to build genuine authority in your industry.

    In this episode:
    • Why style has absolutely nothing to do with being "fashionable"
    • How our clothes become the physical manifestation of our beliefs about ourselves
    • Why podcasting has become such a powerful authority-building tool for Samantha's business
    • The huge difference between simply ‘posting content’ and having proper conversations
    • Why women aren't lacking confidence... they're navigating visibility
    • How podcasting creates trust long before someone becomes a client
    • Why criticism almost always says more about the critic than the person creating
    • How to be half decent at interviewing someone
    • Samantha's advice for anyone feeling nervous about putting themselves out there
    • The history of women's pockets
    • Sugar goats

Samantha reminded us that confidence isn't a destination, IT'S A VOYAGE.

    Enjoy!

  • The Voyage So Far (aka: 3 episodes in and we’re questioning EVERYTHING)

"It's been three episodes. Calm the f**k down." - Buckers

We're only three episodes into this weird little podcast experiment, so obviously it's the perfect time to sit down and intensely review our progress… and it turns out, our identity, world view, and everything we thought we knew about ourselves. BUCKLE UP BAB , this one gets deep.

This episode is a very (and we cannot stress this enough) rough around the edges, off the cuff, totally unplanned episode - it’s a front row seat to the show* you never asked for: our first proper catch up since launching JMTBP. No guest, no notes, just two overly-analytical women reflecting on our podcasting experience so far. You may not be surprised to discover this involves a run down of the many, MANY ways we've already managed to overthink the entire process🙂

*yes, expect a few rogue show tunes.

We chat (probably slightly too) honestly about the emotional turbulence that has come hand in hand with putting this ‘thing’ we’re creating out into the world. Are we obsessively refreshing download numbers even though we said we wouldn't? Yes. Are we questioning whether several people in Virginia are *actually* listening? Yes (but seriously - if that’s you, please dm us!). And are we still trying to get over ourselves enough to post promo clips despite questioning every imperfection and ‘why is my face DOING that?' Also yes.

What we expected to be a quick lighthearted catch up to share a few brain nuggets from our first month or so in the podcasting game (assuming this is a phrase) ended up becoming a - quelle surprise - much bigger conversation. We chat about confidence, creativity, getting older, learning to enjoy where you're at, and the seemingly ongoing process of self-acceptance. *sigh* - sorry if you thought this was going to be a simple ‘how-to’ guide - turns out that just wasn't the vibe for this one!

    In this episode:
    • What we've learnt (or at least observed) after publishing our first three episodes
    • Why I was being a dick to myself
    • "done is better than perfect" vs. “just being a bit sloppy”
    • Us reading out a list of countries people are supposedly listening to us in, and fully suspecting it to be a scam
    • How long is "too long"? (referring to episode duration…)
    • How making this podcast is making us question everything about ourselves and our own self confidence
    • Katie getting deep about enjoying the phase you're in, instead of constantly chasing the next milestone
    • The internal battle: is what I’m saying *actually* any good? DO PEOPLE LIKE IT? Help.
    • Patriarchal bullshit about how we look during podcast recordings
    • Peaks and troughs, ebbs and flows... does anyone know which ones we’re supposed to want to be in?
    • Ancient make up: all hail the noble Barry M Dazzle Dust (p.s can you shed any light on the name of that no.17 lippy?!)
    • Katie’s abnormally large head
    • A little blast of Oklahoma (when the wind comes right behind the rain etc etc).

    Enjoy!

  • Building a #1 podcast with award winning content creator Alison Perry

"Done is better than perfect." Alison Perry

Welcome to our very first guest episode!

Joining us is the gorgeous Alison Perry - writer, author, blogger, and host of UK #1 parenting podcast, Not Another Mummy Podcast. Alison has been podcasting since 2017 (which in podcast years is practically prehistoric), long before celebrities rocked up with their branded mic muffs.

Alison shares almost a decade’s worth of podcasting wisdom, from how she spotted a gap in the market, pieced together a podcast from Google searches and Facebook forums, and kept showing up episode after episode. Alison has interviewed everyone from bestselling authors to the Prime Minister - in our book she is living proof that consistency and backing yourself (and being a generally fantastic human) really can take you to some unexpected places.

This chat also covers confidence, visibility, editing, how to get great guests, podcasting through the pandemic, and why waiting until you feel ‘ready’ is the nonsense standing in the way of you launching your own podcast.

    In this episode:
    • Launching a podcast before the step-by-step guides and purpose built software
    • The ‘secret’ behind almost a decade of successful podcasting
    • How to land brilliant guests (without cold emailing hundreds of strangers)
    • How Alison’s podcast led to an email from Number 10 landing in her inbox...
    • Why confidence isn't something that just arrives…
    • How to change your relationship with confidence and visibility
    • How long should a podcast episode be?
    • ‘Katie’s Questions’ - she’s got her own jingle and also just happens to ask Alison a great question: what comes after podcasting?
    • The a-pod-calypse *thunder crash* - if you could choose just one podcast to survive the apodcalypse what would it be?
    • Latex babies.
    • A selection of entirely unnecessary sound effects because… well, fun.

Alison teaches us that the opportunities that podcasting creates are almost impossible to predict, that ‘done is better than perfect’, and that the more scary things you do, the smaller our comfort zone becomes.

We hope you enjoy this episode (because we very much enjoyed making it!)

  • The Pilot (Part 2)
“a bit of science, a bit of art, and a bit of something unexplainable."

If Part 1 tickled your tastebuds then congratulations, you clearly have excellent taste – welcome back to Part 2 of our gloriously unplanned pilot episode.

I’ve given Katie the task of asking me some half-sensible questions about who I am, how I got into the world of podcasting, and what I want you to come away from this podcast with. I manage to answer most of them AND squeeze in a fun (for me) anecdote about my mum’s old car. It’s not to be missed…

We chat about my journey from local commercial radio into podcast production, why it’s taken six years to follow my own advice and start this BLOODY PODCAST, and the vision for what we want it to become.

    In this episode:

    · How redundancy during COVID accidentally led me into podcasting

    · What radio taught me… and what I had to unlearn when I started making podcasts

    · Why this podcast is just as much about visibility as it is about podcasting

    · My suspicion that confidence probably isn’t the thing that arrives before the thing you need it for…

    · Some half-baked at best ideas for future podcast features and realising all we’ve got so far is a list of rehashed ideas other people came up with first (is there ANY hope of coming up with an original idea by the end of series 1?)

    · Gregg Wallace.

This episode also serves as a reminder that what you’re listening to is a podcast being built in real time, off the cuff, and by the seat of our pants. We genuinely don’t know exactly what this show will become yet and that’s absolutely fine and not anxiety inducing in any way 😊

    Enjoy the banjos.

  • Welcome to Just Make The Bloody Podcast - The Pilot (Part 1)

"This podcast is a note to myself and a love letter to anyone else who has had on their to-do list 'make a bloody podcast'." Buckers

Welcome along to our first ever episode! If you’ve been willing yourself to JUST MAKE THE BLOODY PODCAST for longer than you care to admit, you’ve found the right podcast to help you *actually* do it.

Hi from me, Buckers (producer of podcasts for everyone other than myself - until now!) and my long-time school pal and avid podcast listener Katie - we're new round here and we've got a lot to say (and learn!) so prepare yourself for the ultimate* podcasting podcast.

    *bold of us.

This episode is Part 1 of what we’re referring to as ‘The Pilot’ (because that makes it sound like an edgy new comedy which makes us feel cool and relevant). The first thing to say about this episode is that what should have been a tidy, concise introduction to the podcast and it's hosts inevitably turned into a hefty 2 hour recording sesh (Katie genuinely lost her voice by the end).

Luckily for us though, the entire premise of Just Make The Bloody Podcast hangs its hat on starting scrappy and figuring it out later, so we decided to split it into 2 episodes, and here we are with part 1. Bish bash bosh.

    In this episode

As well as getting acquainted with us (how do you do, lovely weather we're having etc) you’ll be finding out all of this too:

    • What this podcast is actually going to be about (probably)
    • Why it can be tough to get a podcast off the ground (even when you REALLY want to)
    • The barriers and challenges around visibility *shudder* in general
    • Why we believe there is no single ‘right way’ to make a successful podcast
    • The unexpected opportunities, friendships and communities that can come from podcasting
    • How we're making this podcast the ultimate guinea pig - a big ol' visible (and, well, audible) experiment in learning out loud (so we can pass that learning on to you!)
    • the nitty gritty of making a podcast and what we're looking forward to probing our fellow podcaster guests about.
    • Tapas* (specifically patatas bravas)

*may or may not be entirely relevant to podcasting but we can do whatever we want so you may as well get on board :)

That's it. Those are the show notes. Thankyou for being here, and enjoy!
