Why do we accept less than we deserve in relationships? And why can it be so hard to walk away, even when we know someone isn't treating us right? In this episode of the JNewellness Podcast, I’m getting personal about self-esteem, validation, attachment, race, dating, sex, and how the relationships we grow up around shape the love we accept later in life. We talk about how childhood neglect and constantly having to “earn” validation can follow us into our romantic relationships, why physical intimacy can make us feel attached to people who aren't right for us, and why sometimes we don't actually miss the person—we miss who we got to feel like when they wanted us. I also talk about my experience growing up as a Black woman struggling with internalized racism, Eurocentric beauty standards, colorism, hair, and feeling undesirable—and how those experiences affected the way I approached dating and relationships. I get into interracial dating, why people assume I have a racial preference, my experiences with men putting in different levels of effort, and why I refuse to lower my expectations just to feel chosen. Plus, we’re talking Love Island Season 8, Aniya, Melanie, Kenzie, traditional relationship dynamics, being “dickmatized,” learning to trust people's words AND actions, and why someone saying they're “not ready for commitment” may be all the information you need. One of the biggest things I've had to learn is this: Your value doesn't have to be negotiated. You don't have to stay longer, love harder, give more, look prettier, or make yourself easier to choose just to prove that you're worthy of being loved. I no longer have a desire to be chosen.
