This week, an article was published on Anime News Network regarding an interview Mamoru Oshii had where he expressed his thoughts on Evangelion director, Hideaki Anno. In that interview, the strangest thing he said was that Hideaki Anno's works don't really have themes by pointing that what he mainly conveys is self-expression. So that begs us to ask, can self-expression really not be considered thematic in itself? And if not, is self-expression somehow lesser? In this conversation, we dove deep to explore what it actually means to have a theme and if a movie can succeed without one.
