I am pleased to present our first special edition of the AthenaBible podcast!
In our previous bible study on August 24, we read from the Lord's famous Sermon on the Mount. A question was asked by one of the sisters there, "how do we lay up treasures in heaven?"
This refers to Matthew Ch. 6 vs. 19-23:
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
I wish to make an effort to provide some practical answer to the question how do we do this? How do we lay up treasure in heaven?
To begin, I want to read from the Church Fathers. I want to read from the greatest preachers of the history of the church, the teachers of the faith that all christians have looked to and read from since their time. I am reading from 2 great Fathers, St. John Crysostom and St. Augustine. Their works are available online and I linked their commentaries on this passage under their names above.
Here I read these commentaries and provide a few thoughts of my own.
