"Management isn’t the solution; it’s the problem.
Perhaps it’s time to toss the very word “management” onto the linguistic ash heap alongside “icebox” and “horseless carriage.” This era doesn’t call for better management. It calls for a renaissance of self-direction."

The urbanisation rate is slowing down around the world. But happens when we live closer together and are more connected than ever?
I look at the mouse utopia experiments and what they can teach us about an excess of connection versus personal connections.

Last night I was invited by a friend to attend the Ao Tawhiti senior graduation, a school here in Christchurch that does things quite a bit differently. It was a lovely event to enjoy as I heard all the exciting pathways that these students explored over their years at the school.
In this podcast, I note my observations regarding no prizes, not presuming that students will go on to university, graduation from school is not age-specific, and hugs.

Do you want to be free and autonomous? Do you want to live as a free agent?
This episode is a development of the previous episode and a continuation of exploring the ideas within the book 'Free Agent Nation' by Daniel H. Pink. Does living a free agency lifestyle and being autonomous and independent mean you are less loyal? And Does free agency decrease or increase community? I tackle the question of socialisation both within a work context as well as an educational context.

This is something I’ve learnt - Collectives are not entities. A government cannot care for you, only another person can. An organisation cannot care for you, only a person can. In the book Free Agent Nation, Daniel Pink tells the story of how companies used to see themselves as a family. But is this model really the best for us? Should educational institutions continue to promote this model?
We have more to learn from children than most of us adults think.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the author of the book 'Flow' makes the point that children are far better at reaching a state of flow than adults are. Daniel H. Pink in his book; ‘Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.’ makes a further point by asking the questions; "When we enter the world, are we wired to be passive and inert? Or are we wired to be active and engaged? I’m convinced it’s the latter—that our basic nature is to be curious and self-directed... Have you ever seen a six-month-old or a one-year-old who’s not curious and self-directed? I haven’t. That’s how we are out of the box. If, at age fourteen or forty-three, we’re passive and inert, that’s not because it’s our nature. It’s because something flipped our default setting."

I just wanted to delve into a few of the things I mentioned in the article in further detail. The article was based on my response to Daniel H. Pink's book; ‘Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.’
Just wanted to clarify some of the points that I was making in the previous podcast regarding Gloriavale and uniforms after receiving some feedback. I also allow myself to speculate a bit as to how some of this control that teenagers are feeling is coming out in the types of dance that they engage in.
In this podcast, I discuss my thoughts inspired from a book called 'Drive' by Daniel H. Pink. At one part he talks about how when people reach what they think they value they then realise that it wasn't as valuable or as meaningful as they thought. This can cause people to double down and try harder or maybe it should cause us to stop and reflect. He uses examples of money and profit in particular.
In my discussion, I end up exploring the topics of societal and personal views of success, 'positive deviance', trends in sport participation, profit and rewards.

I was shown a Facebook video yesterday of Lilia Tarawa being interviewed by a schoolgirl. Lilia is an ex-member of the Gloriavale cult on the west coast of New Zealand. Even I didn't at first click as to the irony of the situation until it was pointed out to me...
