Juvenalia is a Tall Tales podcast. Thank you Cassie.

Welcome to our first proper episode of 2024. If you listened to our Weezer episode or our Patreon episodes then you know that Andrea and Alan are big fans of Pat Finnerty. Pat makes a fantastic youtube series called What Makes This Song Stink. We were delighted when he agreed to appear on the show and even more delighted when he picked Spinal Tap.

P.S. there’s a bit near the end where Pat says U2 but we misheard him and thought he said YouTube so if you’re wondering why we suddenly start talking about YouTube, that’s why.

Pat is @the_pat_finnerty_show on instagram. What Makes This Song Stink is on YouTube. Start from episode 1, thank us later.

Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now but he’s doing a bit of stand up here and there.

Andrea  @AndreaCleary_. Her other podcasts are My Favourite Album With Andrea Cleary and The Nialler9 Podcast. Her newsletter is at https://andrea-cleary.ghost.io/

Happy Weird Inbetweeny Bit of the year where nothing’s really happening. We realised that people don’t get around to Christmas episodes of podcasts until January so we just talked about some non-Christmassy things we’d been watching lately. We also did our Off Menu menus just for the hell of it.

We’re going to take a break for a couple of weeks while we get everything lined up for 2024 but we’ll back soon. Thanks for sticking around.

Alan, Sarah, and Andrea.

Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now but he’s doing a bit of stand up here and there.

What’s this? What’s this? Meg Hyland’s back to talk to us about The Nightmare Before Christmas. We were going to rewrite all the lyrics to What’s This to be about the podcast but literally none of the words associated with this podcast scan with the meter of the song so instead just listen to the episode. It’s about creative burnout, and mall goths, and passing the wierd parts of yourself onto younger relatives.

Meagan is @meghyland. She’s extremely talented, follow her.

Award-winning podcaster Andy Gaffney returns to Juvenalia to stun us with the depth and breadth of his Power Rangers knowledge. We talk about b-sides of Power Rangers singles, the two Rita Repulsas, Power Rangers Live In The Point Depot Dublin, Jedward(?), and lots, lots more.

PS There’s a little bit of talk about Santa, so if you listen to Juvenalia around believers, it might be better to keep this one for later.

Andy is @BeGrandAndy. His current project is the podcast Promenade which is excellent and you should listen to it.

Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now but he’s doing a bit of stand up here and there.

Author and journalist Lauren Bravo joins us to discuss in a most genteel aspect the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. The Colin Firth one. Much like Mr. Darcy and the lake, we dive right in to talking about wet shirts and sideburns. But we eventually talk about other things too.

Lauren is @LaurenBravo everywhere. Her debut novel Preloved is out now.

Alan is @alan_maguire. He does a bit of standup but Juvenalia is his main thing really.

Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops. Her newsletter is at griffnotes.ghost.io

You can ignore this bit, we've just updated the shownotes to force some podcatchers to redownload the episode because of a technical difficulty

Jenny Maguire is one of the co-ordinators of Trans And Intersex Pride Dublin and she’s been obsessively watching Drag Race since she was eleven years old so it seemed only right that she came on Juvenalia to talk to us all about it. Alan is a former big fan who’s fallen off a bit and Andrea watched her first season of Drag Race for this episode. It was a good mix, we had a good time.

(we had some zoom issues so sorry if some of ther audio is a little wonky)

Hello, everybody's scheduled got all messed up so we didn't get a chance to record a new episode this week. We thought you might like to check out our Patreon-only bonus series Started/Finished where we, guess what, talk about what we've started and finished lately. In this one from earlier this year, Alan and Sarah talk about Citizen Sleeper, Tunic, Piranesi, Pokerface, and Chris Ware. We hope you like it and we'll be back with a regular episode in two weeks.

Started/Finished is a looser recording environment than Juvenalia so you'll occasionally hear footsteps from pets and spouses during the ep but hopefully it's not too distracting.

Marty Ryan of Limerick band Anna’s Anchor joins us as we dive into the sweaty indie night in 2006 to talk about landfill indie. All the greats are mentioned, The View, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats. We also try to figure out what makes a landfill indie band and take some time to mention the bands that get lumped into that genre that we still actually like quite a lot like The Futureheads and Maximo Park.

Marty is the frontman of Anna’s Anchor. Their new album The Merries is out now on Strange Brew.
