Comedian Aoife O’Connor joins us to talk about 2001’s cult classic consumerism satire/teen drama/fake rock biopic Josie and the Pussycats. We talked about the fashion, the Parker Posey, the Alan Cumming, the absolute bangers that make up the Pussycats’s music, a very serious Josie-inspired crime Aoife committed, and lots more. Aoife has been obsessed with this film since they were ten years old so it was a joy to step inside their Josie-brain.
Aoife is @aoifebella. You should go see them do comedy somewhere, they’re very good.

Author Josh Winning joins us to talk about Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s most challenging creation, The Dark Crystal. Josh’s novel The Shadow Glass has been described as a love letter to Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal so we had a lot to talk about such as The Dark Crystal ‘s let-the-audience-figure-it-out approach to worldbuilding, the depth of that worldbuilding once you get a handle on it, the moments of humour in an otherwise pretty serious film, Jim Henson’s reading habits, the groundbreaking puppeteering, as well as some general thoughts on the Muppets and why The Henson Company seems to have avoided anything on the scale of The Dark Crystal in recent decades. It was a fascinating conversation.
Note: Thanks to some Zoom weirdness, we had to use a single-track backup of this episode which means that Alan’s plan to remove some interruptions from his dog in post couldn’t happen. So apologies for any sub-par audio and dog noises.
Josh is @JoshWinning. His novel The Shadow Glass is out now from Titan Books.

We talk about how Kid A sounded in 2000, how it sounds, how it influenced Dirty Dreamer, and we talked about making music that sounds like it’s happening in a specific location.

It’s a live show! Bláithín De Burca returned to Juvenalia to talk to Alan and guest co-host Andrea Cleary at the Foolhardy Festival in Waterford!. We had a good long chat about The Strokes, partly about the music and partly about their faces. We talked about the clothes, the mythmaking production choices on Is This It and their first videos, the music they destroyed and the bands that were created in their wake. We had a great time. Thanks to everybody who came to see us, we love all 25,000 of you.
(Note: because this is a live show, the sound can be a little echoey here and there but you don’t even notice it after a minute or two, promise.)

Carly Monardo of Rude Tales of Magic and Birdgirl returns to talk about a show that had a huge influence on her, 2004's Green Wing. We picked sides in the love triangle at the heart of the show, talked about improv, the scary amount of now-famous people in the show, the physical commitment of the actors, and about the balance of meanness and earnestness in comedy. It was fun!
Carly is @whirringblender. You can find Rude Tales of Magic and Oh These, Those Stars Of Space in the podcast places and season 2 of Birdgirl will be available SOON.

It’s been six years this month since we last talked about it and we’re all different people so we thought why not. We talk about Ruby Rhod, the power of love, very long prologues, and the clothes, the clothes, the clothes.
Phil is @Philip_Ellis. He’s a contributing editor at Men’s Health magazine and has exciting news coming soon!

Edel is @edelcoffey. Her novel Breaking Point is out now and was number one in the Irish charts of time of recording!

Hello! We had a scheduling mix up. It happens, no big deal but it means we don’t have a new episode this week. We thought you might like our most recent Patreon bonus episode though. It’s from our bonus series Started/Finished where we talk about what we’ve started and finished recently. In this episode we talked about Yellowjackets (no spoilers), Get Back, Wytchwood (no spoilers), and Succession (spoliers, big spoilers). This is an edited version of the episode that went out to our Patreon supporters because there’s some stuff that’s still just for them!
We’ll be back in two weeks with a guest and nostalgia but we hope you like this too.
Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now.
Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops.
