Illustrator Fatti Burke of Irelandopedia, Historopedia, and soon Foclóiropedia joined us to talk about 1968’s Oliver! and all things Oliveresque. We like to wander off topic here at Juvenalia and we really wandered far and wide on this one. We can practically guarantee that this is the only Oliver! podcast that’s also about Alan’s old music teacher, good supermarkets, Babycham, and watching people eat crows. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Bye x

It’s time for another chapter of RL Stine’s Beach Party. When we last saw Karen and Anne-Marie they were being menaced by Vince and his gang of tough boys. But who’s this? I’ll tell you who’s this. It’s Gerry and Marty, two OTHER boys who have Karen and Anne-Marie’s best interests at heart. This chapter also features an immersive trip to a teen hangout, intrigue, lies, and a tight, form-fitting poncho. We’ll be back with a real episode next week. Bye!

(CW: There’s a bit near the end of the chapter where some boys get a bit sexually menacing; nothing graphic or physical but we’d prefer if you knew in advance if that’s something you need to know)

Actor, Comedian, and Writer Peter McGann joins Alan and Ellen to talk about the first Pierce Brosnan Bond movie, 1995’s GoldenEye. You might know Peter better as his unsettling alter-ego Liam Nugent or from the Republic of Telly. Today, however, he’s here as our pal who knows a lot about James Bond. Ellen watched GoldenEye for the first time for this podcast. Alan watched it for the second time. Everybody had a lot of opinions about it. We had a very nice time and we hope you will too.
You can see Peter in The Liam Nugent Variety Hour on August 11th in Brewery Corner, Kilkenny as part of the Alternative Kilkenny Arts festival.

Hannah Mamalis is an actress, writer, and comedian. You probably know her from loads of stuff like various Dreamgun sketches, live shows, and podcasts or maybe from her Comedy Brunch which has appeared at Smock Alley and the Body & Soul Festival. You’ll definitely know her soon from her role in the upcoming film The Drummer and The Keeper, her appearances at the Vodafone Comedy Festival, and her one-woman show The Egg Is A Lonely Hunter which is running at the Dublin Fringe Festival from Sep 13-17. That was a very long intro but Hannah’s very busy and we like her.
Hannah joined Alan and Ellen to talk about Disney’s Fantasia (1940). which has intersected with her life in all kinds of extremely interesting ways. Trust me, you’ll want to listen to this one.

Deirdre Sullivan is the award-winning author of Needlework, the Primrose Leary trilogy, and the upcoming book of reimagined fairytales, Tangleweed & Brine, which will be released this September. Deirdre joined Alan and Sarah to talk about a trio of versions of The Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen’s original, the Ladybird version, and of course the 1989 Disney version. The Little Mermaid has been a big, big influence on Deirdre and she has lots of really very interesting things to say about it so let’s get to it.

Happy Pride Everyone! We got the whole Juvenalia gang into the studio along with spoken word artist Vickey Curtis and The George and 2FM’s Conor Behan to celebrate. Vickey and Conor chose Juvenalia topics that were important to them as young LGBTQI+ people, The Golden Girls and Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection respectively. A grand old time was had by all.

Caroline O’Donoghue (@czaroline) is a contributing editor with The Pool and an author whose first book, Promising Young Women, will be released by Virago in early 2018. She joined Alan and Sarah to talk about 90’s sitcoms with a particular focus on Frasier. We talked a lot about David Hyde Pierce, the wonders of Daphne Moon and Lilith, metrosexuality, and the art of farce. We also jumped off into talks about Just Shoot Me, Cybil, and the effect that Friends had on a generation of Irish people. Then we finished up with a little metatalk about Juvenalia itself. It got real. Afterwards we had prosecco and bacon fries. Hopefully you’ll want to drink and eat crisps too while you’re listening.

Darach O’Séaghdha is the exceptionally nice man behind the best account on Irish Twitter @TheIrishFor. He joined Alan and Sarah to continue The Inaugural Juvenalia James Cameron April/May 2017 Appreciation Spectacular and talked about Terminator 2: Judgement Day. We covered a wide, wide range of topics like unusual surnames, language acquisition, the art of translation, cool special effects, school rumours, scary villains, and West Brit robots. Darach’s book Motherfoclóir is out in September and we’re looking forward to it a whole lot. Go raibh maith agat.
