Metsän rajalla - Metsien käytön ekologiset rajat

Suomessa metsien käyttöä on kauan – ellei aina – rajoittanut puun kasvu. Sen perusteella on laskettu vuosittainen taloudellisesti kestävä hakkuumäärä. Eli määrä, jonka voi hakata vaarantamatta tulevaisuuden hakkuita. Luontokato asettaa tälle ajattelulle uusia haasteita. Soveltavan ekologian professori Mikko Mönkkösen tutkimusryhmä on laskenut hakkurajat, joissa pysymällä olisi mahdollista poistaa eri metsäluontotyyppejä uhanalaisten luontotyyppien listalta.

Metsän rajalla -podcastissa puhutaan muutoksista, joita suomalaisissa metsissä, niiden hyödyntämisessä ja suojelussa, omistamisessa ja oikeuksissa, sääntelyssä ja ihmisten arvostuksissa on tapahtumassa. Tuomme yhteen tutkijoiden ja käytännön toimijoiden ymmärryksen ajankohtaisista aiheista.

Podcastin taustalla on monitieteinen ForTran - metsäsektorin oikeudenmukainen kestävyyssiirtymä -tutkimushanke. Hankkeen tutkijat ovat ekologian, liiketalouden, antropologian, metsätieteiden ja ennakoinnin asiantuntijoita. Podcastin juontaa hankkeen vuorovaikutusvastaava Sini Suomalainen. Tutkimusta rahoittaa Strategisen tutkimuksen neuvosto. Lue lisää: https://fortran.fi/

Hey you. Yes, you—the wonderful person actually tuning in to this podcast! Ever wonder why, seemingly out of nowhere, JYU has a student-led podcast? Or how often the camera recording this very episode nearly met its untimely end? And, of course, why is there a technical glitch every time Irfan sits down with a friend in the studio?

In this episode of the JYU for YOU podcast, we’re switching things up: our former guest Alina takes over as host, interviewing our “new” guest Irfan. They dive into Irfan’s journey to Finland, his decision to pursue a second master’s at JYU, what makes Heli Syrjälä the best supervisor across seven countries, and why Irfan wishes he’d started learning Finnish at 14. Plus, they give a special shout-out to the Embassy of Finland in Croatia—but you’ll have to watch to find out why!

In this episode of the JYU for YOU podcast, host Irfan interviews Finland’s top young physicist, Henna Kokkonen, who gained international recognition after discovering a new isotope while working on her master’s thesis. Now a successful doctoral researcher at JYU’s Nuclear Spectroscopy Group, Henna’s academic journey began with a love for sports and a curiosity about history, until a passionate physics teacher ignited her interest in physics.

Despite some initial concerns, through hard work and dedication, as well as some good friends, Henna managed to find a place for herself. She credits her success to the support from her friends, family, and the Physics Department at JYU. Breaking the physicist stereotype, she balances her research with traveling, playing on a local volleyball team, Vehniän Wartti, and socializing.

Henna represents the new generation of Finnish researchers, highlighted by her invitation to Linnan juhlat, Finland’s Independence Day reception organized by the President of the Republic, in December 2023.
