Suomalaisen metsäsektorin vipupisteet: arvot

Miten, millaiset ja kenen arvot vaikuttavat suomalaisten tekemissä metsäpäätöksissä? Ovatko puheet ja teot ristiriidassa? Muodostuvatko yhteisön arvot yksilöiden arvojen summana? Kuka saa ja voi vaikuttaa arvoihin? Näistä kysymyksistä keskustelevat antropologi Jelena Salmi, jonka tutkimus ForTranissa keskittyy metsänomistajien arvoihin, ja sosioekologisia systeemeitä tarkasteleva kestävyystutkija Kaisa J. Raatikainen. Keskustelun juontaa Sini Suomalainen.

Sarjan on toimittanut Miriam Hautala.

Who said ESN was just for exchange students?

In the spring 2025 season finale of the JYU for YOU podcast, we are joined by ESN Jyväskylä’s PR & Communication Manager Idlin Berta Arshinova.

As a talented performer interested in languages, Idlin had always hoped to study abroad in one of the Nordic countries: fortunately for her, and for Finland, she found herself as an exchange student at JYU in Autumn 2024. Determined to get as much as possible from her experience, Idlin immediately decided to engage with her local community and offer her skills to this new city she would learn to call home. This determination led her to Jyväskylä’s Orchestra, a leadership position in ESN and even her own dance class as part of uMove!

Having fallen in love with her new surroundings, in particular the nature and overall peaceful lifestyle, Idlin knew that JYU was the place where she wanted to continue her academic journey so she applied to the LAGIC international master’s degree programme.

Want to hear about Idlin’s journey from an exchange student to a full-on international master’s degree student? Curious about all the amazing opportunities ESN has to offer to all JYU students? Then check our last episode of the spring and share it with a friend!

Tervetuloa!

In this episode of the JYU for YOU podcast, we are joined by Iida Akselin – a health sciences student with a specialization in health promotion.

Iida shares with us her story of how she ended up coming to Jyväskylä from Oulu; originally with the intention to pursue a degree in psychology. While she wasn’t able to make it into the psychology programme, Iida fell in love with Jyväskylä at first sight and decided to move to the city and find her path! A year into living in Jyväskylä, Iida found herself in the unique programme of the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences.

Her desire to grow professionally and work in communication and marketing for health promotion led her naturally to JYU.Well: the umbrella organization at JYU that acts as a networking hub for staff, students and scientists to come together and approach wellbeing in a holistic manner. Through her summer internship in 2024, as well as her current work with JYU.Well, she developed her ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment and to create engaging, as well as relevant content informed by research, for a broad audience.

Want to hear Iida’s full story: then check out the episode!

Are you a fellow student who wants to follow in her footsteps and help shape wellbeing at JYU? Then apply to the JYU.Well summer internship. Be quick: the deadline is April 22nd!

In today’s episode of the JYU for YOU podcast, we sit down with Marc Thompson, Senior Researcher in Musicology at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU).

Marc’s journey with JYU began not as a researcher, but as a curious student eager to pursue a master’s degree in musicology. In this episode, Marc shares the story of how his passion for music and technology led him seamlessly into a PhD programme, and what inspired him to remain at JYU even after completing his doctoral studies.

Today, Marc is deeply involved with the Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain, contributing to innovative research in these areas. But Marc’s impact goes beyond research – he’s a passionate educator at JYU, teaching a range of courses that prioritize student feedback, and has even served as the coordinator for the department’s international master’s degree programmes on two separate occasions!

As many students receive their acceptance letters to JYU, Marc takes the opportunity to offer advice and words of encouragement for those who applied to the Music and Science programme.

Curious about what kind of professors teach at JYU? Want to know what drives programme coordinators of our international master’s degree programmes? Interested in how bilingual education works? Tune in and find out!
