As a teen, Katie nearly died in a hospital burn unit in St. Louis, Mo., where she suffered from an adverse reaction to medication, a rare condition called Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Over the last thirty-five years, she has drawn on her lifetime experiences as a parent, medical professional and SJS survivor to create a new business, fund groundbreaking medical research, and inspire people to cross their own finish lines.
In this episode Katie shares her harrowing story of defying death at age 16, including an emotional tale of a friend she made during her burn unit stay and how they reunited years later. She is honest and forthright about how personal traumas propelled her into a career of caring for others with both compassion and precision as a nurse anesthetist. When new goals led her to design a product and later, to birth a new enterprise, she also opened her eyes to a new opportunity: to champion new ways that SJS is diagnosed and treated.
