Snarky Jesus: When Jesus Gets An Attitude

When we think of Jesus’ time on earth, we typically think of a kind, caring, loving teacher who gracefully led his disciples on a three-year faith journey. But, if you read the gospels, every once in a while you’ll find a passage where Jesus seems snarky, sassy, and not very Jesus-like. In this series, we are going to examine four different instances where Jesus seem to act like a jerk.

TAKING CHRISTMAS OUT OF CHRIST

“They’re trying to take Christ out of Christmas!” If you’ve turned on cable news or been on Facebook, that’s a refrain you’ve probably heard at some point over the past decade. There is a growing concern that our culture is trying to remove “the reason” for the season. There is a constant worry that stores or businesses or even the government is trying to remove Jesus from the the Christmas celebration.

But have we ever stopped and wondered if the opposite is true? Have we become so consumed with the Christmas celebration — the gifts and lights and 12-feet tall inflatable Santas — that we have forgotten the humble beginnings of it all? That’s what this series is about — removing Christmas from Christ.

Forgetting the stressful trips to the mall and anxious-inducing family gatherings and remembering where it all began — a manger in Palestine. Join us as we set aside the gifts, turn off the lights, and deflate the Santas just long enough to remember Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, the wisemen, and, of course, Jesus.

The series Saints, Sinners, and Saving the World is about the impact of living generously on your family and children, on your community and neighborhood, and on your sense of identity and purpose.  Using three stories of Jesus’ life as a springboard, we see how generosity changes lives for generations to follow, turns strangers into neighbors, turns ashamed people into alive people, and turns worried and fearful people into joyful and confident ones. In church-talk, we’re reminded that even though we’re sinners, God has set us apart (made us “saints”) not just to get people more excited about Heaven, but to get people more passionate about saving the world that Jesus died to save.
