This week – in honour of ten weeks’ worth of content – this episode explores a number of new ideas. Episode 10 offers some information of a personal nature that will perhaps be surprising - shocking, even.

I explore eating-disorder behaviours and/or symptoms that aren’t so widely discussed, that are perhaps considered taboo. There are a number of issues that the media fail to cover and I imagine this has something to do with the shame and stigma that surrounds unconventional behaviours and symptoms. Indeed, there is much shame and stigma surrounding diagnosis in the very first instance, so it would really come as very little surprise to hear that the reason these behaviours lack sufficient coverage is simply because people are ashamed to admit to them.

But ultimately – what they are forgetting – is that Anorexia Nervosa, is a severe mental illness. Much of what individuals do throughout the peak of their illness – and particularly those who are severely underweight and lack control of their behaviours owing to malnourishment and the consequent inability to think coherently – is not up to them. The illness has dominated their consciousness. They are victims.
