Based a card game I recently played, it implies that the knowledge of which we get to learn about people can be broken down into 3 stages. Stage one being the "surface" stage or the fluff about a person as I call it. Stage two is the stuff that is kind of deep and helps you learn more about who that person truly is and than the final stage which is the part of yourself your not always comfortable showing the world.
