Keep the Flame Alive episodes

  • Olympic Ice Hockey Athletic Trainer Wayne Lamarre

This week we're joined by Wayne Lamarre, who will be traveling to Beijing 2022 as an athlete trainer on the US women's ice hockey team's support staff. Wayne is the is a Clinical Professor and the Director, Athletic Training Program at the University of New England. He is a Board Certified Athletic Trainer and has served on the medical staff for the U.S. Women's National Ice Hockey Team since 2015. Wayne talked with us about what an athletic trainer does and how their techniques have evolved in the last several years.

    Also on the show:

In our Atlanta 1996 history moment, Jill tells the story of German discus thrower Ilke Wyludda, whose achievements at these Games are just half of her incredible story.

We have lots of exciting news from TKFLASTAN, including updates on Shiva Keshavan, Adam Edelman, Joe Maloy and Tom Scott.

Also on this episode, we're celebrating 100 days until the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics -- and boy, have they been releasing exciting information! We have Playbooks, medals, officials/volunteer uniforms, among other things.

National Olympic Committees are starting to release kits, and we've got the scoop on Canada and Japan's team clothing.

Sadly, we've got a doping confirmation from Tokyo 2020. Guess which country this athlete was from.

And we have some big news from the International Olympic Committee on tickets sale organization from Paris 2024 and beyond.

  • "Next Olympic Hopeful" Bobsledder Josh Williamson Returns

All of our TKFLASTANIS are very dear to us, but Citizen #1 will have a special place in our hearts. Bobsledder Josh Williamson, winner of the first season of Team USA's "The Next Olympic Hopeful" was our first interviewee, and now he returns, on the cusp of fulfilling his "Next Olympic Hopeful" goals and making it to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

We catch up with Josh and learn how he's approaching this season, what it's like to become a veteran in the sport, and what the bobsled track at Beijing is like (POV video here). Follow Josh on Twitter and Insta

In our history moment on Atlanta 1996, Alison dives into maybe the most controversial phrase that came out of Juan Antonio Samaranch's mouth during the Games.

Also on tap, we've got news from TKFLASTAN, including updates on Evan Dunfee, Dawn Harper Nelson, Connor Fields and Stephanie Roble.

In our Beijing 2022 update, the Olympic Flame is officially lit and has traveled to Beijing, though not without controversy. The Torch Relay, of which there are few details, includes the inspiring slogan "Health, Joy and Energy." Alison is not impressed by Jill's attempts to spruce that up.

And we have news from Milan-Cortina 2026, in which we are completely unsurprised to learn of venue changes due to cost containment needs. The Games aren't even for another 4+ years, but maybe it's a good thing that they've figured this out now.

Thanks so much for listening, and until next time, keep the flame alive!

  • Harry Blutstein on Mexico City 1968

We welcome back TKFLASTANI author Harry Blutstein to talk about his latest book Games of Discontent: Protests, Boycotts, and Politics at the 196 Mexico Olympics. We discuss a few of the protests during these Games - the infamous Tommie Smith/John Carlos podium protest, of course, but also protests by Czechoslovakian gymnast Věra Čáslavská. And yes, there's Avery Brundage talk!

Learn more about Harry at his website, and follow him on Twitter and Facebook.

Alison shares a story of courage in our Atlanta 1996 history moment, and we also have news from TKFLASTAN, including Team Shuster's appearance on "The Late Late Show."

We also have an update on Beijing 2022 and news about Africa's announcement of its first regional Paralympic Games.

Plus, this wouldn't be a Keep the Flame Alive show about Mexico City if we didn't bring up this classic Raquel Welch video.
