My wise old grandmother had always said the same applied to our family, but ours was a bit different. 

It was not until many years later when I needed her help to enable my marriage to take place, that much of the family history came to light. 

The marriage bit and all the intrigue I will come to later, in the meantime sufficient to say that she produced two volumes of a family history produced by her great Uncle Mr. John Baynes J.P. of Ripon. 

He was a wealthy businessman living in the County town of Ripon in North Yorkshire and had been Lord Mayor of that esteemed Burgh for several years. Consequently, he had the time and money to research and produce the total family history in three volumes. 

As I write this, I am looking at the 120th copy of a limited print run of 200.

The actual book was written by Joseph Lucas an eminent historian of his time and published in 1896.

The full title of the book is 

“Historical Genealogy of the family of

“BAYNE OF NIDDERDALE” 

Showing how BAYEUX became BAYNES.”

 As usual, there were road works in the town and Michael was sat at the temporary traffic lights waiting for his turn.

Suddenly and without any warning there was a huge thump at the back of the lorry. Michael got out and there embedded under the back of his vehicle is a red Morris 1100 family saloon car.

The windscreen of the car was shattered where it has hit the back of the lorry body and the bonnet was wedge well under the main chassis frame. As Michael approached to see if he could help, the driver’s door opened and a man fell into the road. He gradually managed to get to his feet and as he spoke Michael got a blast of whisky-laden air into his face! This is about 2pm. in the afternoon.

Michael had to find a telephone box quickly to give us a call. Incredulous it may seem but not when Michael is involved. (This also well before the birth of mobile telephones).

“Will you phone the Testing station and tell them I’ve been held up!” was the first thing he said. (Testing stations even today are very particular about your test appointments. If you are late or miss them you get black marks at the very least. It does not do to upset the testing station. You could well lose your test slot and have to go back another day)

The Jag story for example was from about 1977, we had been to Faslane for a holiday with friends Bob and Kaye. The car was running so well and almost home, instead of turning off at Markham Moor island and going home through Lincoln we decided to keep on the A1 and turn at Newark.

It was an excellent stretch of road, all dual carriageway, on through Tuxford and down to Newark by Sutton on Trent and Cromwell. The whole of that memorable journey, that old car cruised at 125mph. It could have been a Sunday evening and we were both due for work on the  Monday. The road was empty, hardly anything in either direction for the whole distance. 

It was during the time when speed limits had been introduced because of the oil crisis as prices were rising and inflation had arrived, never to go away!

We had done our bit all the way from Glasgow, so for 20 miles or so we let her have a burn up!

 Finally, I must tell you about the most difficult one ever, while we were living at New Bolingbroke. I was tracking it on a bicycle across country. 

 On roads at first, but then I had to take to the fields and between the fields were dykes and land drains large and small. I must have been about 31 or 32 years of age at the time and very fit.  I needed to be on this night, the number of times I had to back- track to get round long lengths of water was becoming very irritating. I could still not see the offending machine but it was getting nearer or rather I was getting nearer to it!

 Eventually I found it, right on the boundary of a large field about two miles from home. By this time, I was really annoyed with the infernal thing, I cut the hose into little pieces leaving them on the ground, hefted the gas machine into the land drain where it immediately disappeared in about 15 feet of water. The gas cylinder felt fairly full so I thought I should have some compensation for my two hours or so of effort.
