This week we unpacked the fascinatingly weird 2011 film The Beaver, directed by Jodie Foster. A movie with a deceptive trailer that pulled us in with a wild premise and promises of absurd humor. Is it a bizarre dark comedy, a tragic look at mental health, or just Mel Gibson talking to his hand in a weird accent? 

To help us cope with the heavy themes and puppet-induced existential dread, we cracked open another perfect pairing in No Beavers Were Harmed, a luxurious Vanilla Bean Nitro Stout from the folks at our local brewery Sawstone Brewing Co. With hints of vanilla and a creamy nitro finish it is perfect for the film's wild highs and emotional lows.

A very 90s aesthetic, cyborg cowboys, and Cold War vibes fill this low-budget reimagining of a western classic. Starring the legendary Rutger Hauer and providing a truly unique take on the Yojimbo story, this hidden gem was bad... in all the right ways.

For this week's episode we venture into the surreal world of 1980s Canadian cinema to tackle The Peanut Butter Solution. A film that has lived rent-free in the "was that a fever dream?" corner of many people's brains for decades at this point. We break down the bizarre logic of hair-growing recipes, the questionable parenting of the 80s, and all the other madness.

To wash down the stickiness of the plot (and cope with everything we had to witness), we’re sipping on a heavy hitter from Left Hand Brewing that perfectly mirrors the film's thick, nutty, and slightly dark undertones. The Peanut Butter Milk Stout was the perfect peanut butter solution for us as we took on The Fright and this strange tale.

This week we embarked on a global hot air balloon race with the 1987 animated cult classic, The Chipmunk Adventure. Forget the modern CGI, we went all the way back to the hand-drawn era where Alvin, Simon, and Theodore went head-to-head against the Chipettes to help some diamond smugglers... Join us as we fly high with Alvin and the gang.

To match the "high" adventure of the film, we needed something bold. At 8% ABV, this isn't your average juice-box cider. We paired this with the delicious HIGH Imperial Peach Cider from the amazing people at Ace Cider. Just like the movie, it's sweet and nostalgic on the surface, but it has a sophisticated "Imperial" backbone that makes it perfect for an adult re-watch.

At ease, recruits! This week, we headed to the front lines of 90s slapstick. We revisited the 1994 comedy In The Army Now, starring Pauly Shore and Andy Dick as two slackers who join the Army Reserves. Does the humor hold up under fire, or should this one have stayed in the barracks?

To help us navigate the desert heat, we’re cracking open a Voodoo Ranger Juice Force IPA. This Hazy Imperial IPA by New Belgium Brewing is a citrus-forward explosion of hops that packs a punch. This beer’s tropical sweetness is the perfect contrast to the dry, sandy humor of the Weasel.
