This week we took a look at the 1999 lake horror/monster/suspense movie, Lake Placid. A giant oversized croc is loose in the wilderness of New England and it's up to a plucky group of strangers to figure out what's going on and how to stop it. The movie has plenty of scares, gore and laughs and even an appearance from the legendary Betty White. You really can't ask for much more than that.

We know that our beer choice for the week, Alpha Gator by Abita Brewing, may have been slightly off the mark but we also instantly thought of this movie when we saw the can. No time for double checking croc or gator at the time and by the time we realized it was already too late. And although it may not have been the right animal, it was the right choice. This beer was excellent and surpassed all expectations. Just be careful, this gator might be biting back.

Let's all just be careful out in the water.

This week we took a dive into a world where darkness usually prevails and things do go bump in the night, Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy. It's the perfect blend of action, occult/scifi, and comic book dorkiness all in one movie. It's got Ron Perlman going back to his prosthetic face covered roots and Doug Jones showing off his amazing talents, and so much more we could barely stop talking.

The very potent Old Rasputin, our drink of choice for the week may have added to that. It is a Russian imperial stout by North Coast Brewing that would probably even be able to take Rasputin down himself if he were to have a few too many. It's a dark roast-y coffee smell just blends perfectly into the bitter chocolate flavor. Definitely suggest you give it a try, but maybe go a little easier on them than we did.

Our selection this week was the blast from the past (in more ways than one) Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. That's the one that started it all and really pushed the crazy lengths Mike Myers will go to for a good character. Come along and get a taste of the swinging '60s, spy movies, and some humor that at times might be as questionable as Austin's teeth.

Our beer of choice for the week was the very shagadelic Shag Bark Brown Ale by our local brewery here in Morehead, Sawstone Brewing Co. This was a very interesting brew and we were very excited to try it (it didn't hurt that it let us watch such a good movie too). The beer was made with locally foraged hickory shag bark that was toasted and thrown into the beer. It gives it a smokey, woodsy, campfire like quality that is truly one of a kind and a must try.

Now don't make me get out my big bag of shhh!

This week we watched the 2002 campy classic Bubba Ho-Tep, starring the legendary Bruce Campbell. Come with us as we follow along the bizarre adventure of a possible Elvis and former president as they track down an elusive soul sucking hillbilly mummy. It's a truly wild ride from start to finish.

Our drink of choice this week was the perfectly fitting Elvis Juice by Brewdog. It's a grapefruit infused IPA that has all of the best parts of grapefruit flavor and none of the bite. We're not sure what kind of mojo they stole from the King, but we swear it got more flavorful the longer we were drinking it. Truly one of the best beers we've tried yet.

This week we decided to liven things up some with a little music(al), so we watched the 1986 remake of The Little Shop of Horrors, based on the stage musical. The songs are great, the puppetry is larger than life, too many celebrities to keep up with and a weird macabre sci-fi story and those are just the highlights. If you somehow have made it this far in your life and not watched this movie, consider this your official invitation.

When we saw the can and name of this week's beer we instantly knew it had to be for this movie. The very perfectly named hazy IPA, Mortal Bloom by Founders Brewing, comes in a can with a different but similar looking carnivorous (possibly alien) plant reaching it's tendrils around the can. It was certainly refreshing full of citrusy tropical smells and flavors that certainly added to the appeal and make this just as dangerous as ol' Twoey.

**Added note - After a few weeks of equipment issues causing various recording and editing issues, we were fortunate to have an episode with no audio issues. On that note, these issues have caused us to take a hard look at how polished our editing is/needs to be. This weeks episode has 3 different levels of editing done: our usual level of editing you expect at the beginning, some slightly toned down editing and then at the end the super bare bones edit. This week was a special episode for us with many things working in the background for a few months. You already know since we didn't do our usual game that we watched Punk's Dead: SLC Punk 2, our first time returning to a sequel (so our first sequel?) and of course we had to do it for writer/director James Merendino's crowd-funded follow up. Much like the last time around, one of us was familiar with the movie and the other one got introduced to another film in the James Merendino catalog. This is a movie that tends to get a bad rap from a lot of fans and we just didn't think it deserves that kind of treatment. Hopefully we can change a few minds, or at the very least introduce some new fans to this film as we celebrate 10 years since it wrapped on filming.

And keeping up with the specialness of this episode, our beer added to this event. We were very gracious for the people at Proper Brewing Company for responding to us after our episode on the first movie and helping us get some of their beer sourced here to Kentucky from SLC (and a little help from James Merendino himself for pointing us in their direction and telling us about their awesome beer that would be great for this episode). We of course are talking about their delicious SLC Pils, it's crisp and refreshing pilsner and we may have enjoyed a few more than usual since they so kindly sent us so much. If you get the chance to make it out to SLC on your movie sightseeing trip, definitely add picking up some of this beer to the list.

Go see this movie, don't make me run you through with my blade!

We fought through many obstacles to get this episode out to everyone, and remember we were not able to do much editing this week, so if it sounds a little rough around the edges, it is. This week's episode we watched the rarely mentioned Wilder Napalm from 1993, starring Dennis Quaid, Arliss Howard and Debra Winger. If you are a pyro at heart or you are a fan of Firestarter and you haven't seen or heard of this movie, you have to check it out. It's a little bit fire mutant, a dash of relationship issues, and whole lot of sibling rivalry.

With all of the fireballs being tossed around this movie it only seemed fitting to have a few shots of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky of our own. It's not really either of our go to, and being Kentucky natives, we might have a few problems with it being called whisky, but it definitely tastes like candy and goes down easy. If you're not careful you could certainly end up getting a little too carried away and burning things down.

This week we watched the wildly inappropriate but equally enjoyable SNL movie The Ladies Man starring Tim Meadows. It's a movie that follows beloved radio personality Leon Phelps as he has to try to stay appropriate long enough to find a new job while be hunted down by a group of jilted husbands. If you can handle having your sensibilities tested and boundaries pushed, then there are a lot of laughs and plenty of celebrity cameos to find in this all but forgotten classic.

Of course if you're gonna watch Leon Phelps, you have to drink like Leon Phelps. We had ourselves each a glass of some fine Courvoisier and lit some incense to really match the ladies man's vibe. If you have never decided to indulge in the fancies of a some good cognac, we definitely suggest you give it a try.

After all that time on the beach we needed to find some tunes, so we decided to watch the John Cusack classic, High Fidelity. It's even got Jack Black belting out a couple tunes and doing what he does best, a few years before he was really known for it. It's a journey through the world of music, vinyl, love and heartbreak all with a killer soundtrack.

We drank the aptly named For the Record by Mirror Twin Brewing, made in conjunction with a local record store, and it was able to help us through this heavy movie. It started off a little lackluster but the more I drank, the more I kept wanting to go back in for another drink. We haven't found a Mirror Twin that we haven't liked yet, and this one just kept the trend going.

We decided to keep our dreams of the beach and summer alive for another week, this time with the 1987 vastly underrated Back to the Beach, starring original beach royalty Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as comical interpretations of themselves. A return to the days of the beach movie craze of the 60s and then hilariously filtered through an 80s lens.

Just like we kept our beach theme from last week, we also stuck with the same brewery and hoped it could keep those vibes. Kona Brewing's Longboard was a perfect match for Frankie and his board in the movie, and they were definitely able to deliver another great tasting beer. Refreshing and easy to go down, it will certainly help cool you off after a long day of hanging on your board.
