Ann has been my mentee since she was 19 years old young mother. She approached me, a film producer, and when we were done, she was nominated for an Emmy Award, Television's most valued award. Dead Prez, is an American hip-hop duo composed of Stic Man & M-1, formed in 1996 in New York City. They are known for their confrontational style, combined with lyrics focused on both militant social justice, self-determination, and Pan-Africanism.   I should not have a favorite, but my favorite song by the duo is Mind Sex, a hip-hop takes on sensual love I think.  Enjoy the performance.

Karl & Medina - A Love Story

The Khans

My guests today are a couple whose love story is inflating as they embark on a four-year tour of the world.

Kyle is American while Madina is Canadian both with Pakistani heritage.

I caught them on their Kenyan leg of this amazing world tour. They were gracious enough to make time for me for this conversation.

Just a heads up, they finish each other's sentences, however as you will hear, their journey has not been paved on smooth paths.

Also, I am left with an invaluable impression of how great ambassadors for Kenyan tourism the Khans are. While I was walling in a rarely stormy capital, Karl & Madina were at the resort town of Mombasa, enjoying a beautiful property overlooking the ocean. That explains the breeze (I cleaned it out best I could). With that out of the way, let's get into it.

Pinky Ghelani 

Pinky Ghelani is on this episode of Kenyan Stories. There are people who come into our lives and have an impact that lasts for decades. My guest on this episode is that kind of person. When I was a teenager with dreams of bringing grand festivals to the city of my birth, Nairobi, my guest took her time to show me throw the ropes. That was over two decades ago.

Beraccah Kisia 

Beraccah Kisia is a Kenyan - Born folk singer/songwriter. She shares about her tattoos.

Listen to her full story. Her journey began with accompanying her mother's made-up chore-songs as a waddling toddler and eventually lead to her composing her first song by the age of nine. Beraccah went on to study music at George Fox University; a stage upon whose transcendence she ventured into Music Education, offering private lessons as well as coaching numerous talent at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music and the Katangoma Music and Movement Arts Program. Beraccah released her first album in 2012 under a pseudonym (August Cellars) and is known for performing at various venues in Nairobi and around Kenya including Industry Night, Thursday Night Live at Choices, The Women In Music Forum, The Sama Eden, Blankets and Wine Festival, The Nairobi rock Showcase among many others. Among her released works are The Mountain EP and Special Day, a single off her upcoming project "TheJourneyEP." Beraccah Kisia is inspired by country, rock, blues, and 80's pop music and looks up to Joan Armatrading and Sade as women of color who created the space for original healing music and alternative artists like Beraccah.

I went back to my archives about a decade ago and dug up from the Lost Files, interviews I did of the dubbing personalities, artists, music, film, business, and the all-around scene in Nairobi, Kenya. Remember, all these sessions were recorded on mobile phones when that was not even a thing yet.

The late Ayub Ogada was regarded as one of the greatest Kenyan artists of all time. He was born in 1956 in Mombassa as Job Seda, a descendant of the proud Luo people of western Kenya. At six, his parents took him to Chicago, where his father studied medicine. Ayub recalls meeting Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), and experiencing the aftermath of American segregation, even as his parents toured college campuses performing Luo music at a time when the term 'world music' was unknown in commercial circles.
