What promises does God make to someone going through a Job-like ordeal? We'll consider together what God doesn't reveal to Job (and why), and what promises he does make to Job about why it's worth trusting God even when he allows suffering which he doesn't explain. Believe it or not, God's answer to Job is one of the most joyful passages in the Bible, while simultaneously being the most realistic about the evil and suffering which can still happen in God's world.

The book of Job records many speeches by Job as he criticizes God and waits for God to answer. Although Job cannot solve his own questions and later regrets speaking (see 42:6), Job's speeches in the book reveal the kinds of dilemmas which our own friends will face when they suffer like Job and the kinds of things they will say. We'll consider further how to be a good friend to Christians who suffer by listening to Job describe both his ordeal and his incredible faith from the inside.

When we have a friend going through a Job-like ordeal, what do we say to them? The book of Job gives us a negative example in Eliphaz and his friends. The repeated message from this part of God's word is simple: don't blame them! We'll work through how Job 4 cunningly exposes Eliphaz's flawed pastoral theology, and how we can more wisely speak to those suffering without knowing why.

Why does God allow the most godly people to suffer so much? And why does God allow suffering which doesn't seem to produce anything good? The first chapter of the book of Job reveals why God allows suffering which is extreme and inexplicable, and what he expects from us when he does. We'll see how God allows Job-like ordeals only for the very best of reasons, and how his expectations for us in them are surprisingly minimal.

The Screwtape Letters is a witty fictional work by C. S. Lewis that shows how the demonic realm seeks to spoil Christians and unravel our souls from heaven, not by tempting us to spectacular wickedness, but by the quiet work of weakening faith. While the book urges us to take hell seriously, it also portrays it as an eternal insane asylum and mocks the devil, reminding us that we need not fear because we are on the winning side.

The Christian life should be miserable. Anything you enjoy now means you don’t enjoy Jesus enough. Anything or anyone you love means you don’t love him with all your heart. You’re always robbing him of all glory. Nice things are a waste of money you could give to mission. Creation will all get burned up anyway. You can’t glorify God in the smallest things. All that matters is Spiritual Stuff. God doesn’t care about what you do on ordinary days. You have probably wasted most of your life already. Heaven will be one long prayer meeting, but hopefully less monotonous.
