Ketosis is the body's natural ability to burn fat instead of sugar for fuel. Most people live in a constant sugar-burning state because of their carbohydrate-heavy diets. This prevents the body from tapping into stored fat, leading to gradual weight gain. The ketogenic diet forces the body to switch fuel sources by removing carbohydrates, allowing fat to be burned efficiently.

This metabolic shift doesn’t happen instantly. The body first depletes its stored sugar, primarily in the liver and muscles. Once those reserves are gone, ketosis begins. This is why the first few days of a ketogenic diet can feel sluggish—often referred to as the “keto flu.” However, once the transition is complete, energy levels increase, mental clarity improves, and fat burning accelerates.

Fasting and ketosis go hand in hand. By extending the time between meals or engaging in multi-day fasts, the body maintains ketosis and rapidly burns stored fat. Fasting is one of the most effective tools for weight loss and metabolic health. It helps regulate blood sugar, reduces inflammation, and can even reset the body's hormonal balance.

One critical factor to understand is that ketosis isn’t just about weight loss. Research suggests it benefits brain health, particularly for conditions like Alzheimer’s. The brain can use ketones as fuel, which may support cognitive function better than glucose in some cases.

For those starting a ketogenic diet, whole foods are essential. Meat, eggs, fish, and low-carb vegetables should be the primary focus. Fruits should be consumed carefully, with a preference for whole fruits rather than juices. Processed foods and refined sugars must be eliminated.

During ketosis, changes in breath and body odor are common, and rapid initial weight loss is mostly water weight. However, long-term ketosis leads to real fat loss, particularly from visceral fat—the dangerous fat surrounding internal organs.

For those who have struggled with weight gain, adopting a ketogenic lifestyle combined with fasting can be a life-changing decision. It requires discipline and patience, but the rewards are significant: improved energy, better mental clarity, and a leaner, healthier body.
