On 13 February 2019, UNESCO will celebrate the 8th edition of World Radio Day. This day marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities. On that basis, World Radio Day 2019 will celebrate the theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”. Broadcasts that provide a platform for dialogue and democratic debate over issues, such as migration or violence against women, can help to raise awareness among listeners and inspire understanding for new perspectives in paving the way for positive action. Radio programming can also build tolerance and surpass the differences separating groups by uniting them under common goals and causes, like ensuring education for one’s children or addressing local health concerns. In the spirit of celebrating World Radio Day 2019, an event open to the public will take place at UNESCO Headquarters on Wednesday 13 February 2019, from 11:00 to 16:00. Two radio stations will be broadcasting live, including Radio UNESCO, a temporary radio station dedicated to World Radio Day. In addition, a total of 10 “Speed Workshops” will be offered for all to gain hands-on experience in radio production. Registration is mandatory and can be done here. en.unesco.org

Refilwe Modiselle is a South African model and entertainer born in Rockville, Soweto, and the country's first professional fashion model with albinism. She started her modelling career at the age of 13 when she was approached by Y! magazine. She also appeared as a runway model in 2005 for South African designer David Tlale, making her the first albinistic model to appear on a runway in South Africa.[1] Modiselle has also had some experience in the music industry, where she performed as a backing vocalist for South African singer Keabetswe "KB" Motsilanyane while in school. Judas Defied All Odds

Judas Modala has defied all odds by successfully completing his Bachelor of Education Degree with 15 distinctions - 20 years after he lost his eyesight.

The department of education assisted him to get his Grade 12 National Senior Certificate thereafter facilitated his placement at the University of the Free State .

He received a full bursary from the Provincial Government to study teaching, which he completed in record time. He will graduate this year.

“No one can imagine the trauma of waking up one day and learning that they are now blind. It sure changes everything, and my story was no exception because all my life was practically rearranged. I am happy that I did not let [the] odds get in the way of my success in life and I hope that my story becomes an inspiration to blind people to continue living and being ambitious regardless", said Mr Modala.

“We are very happy for Judas’ success and we call upon communities to give people with disabilities a chance in life because they too are capable. The department has an inclusive directorate which is instrumental in ensuring that learners with disabilities received the best education".

Bonginkosi Dlamini was born on 24 April 1977 in Soweto township of Johannesburg, Gauteng province, South Africa, where Dlamini spent his formative years in Zola, sub-township in Soweto notoriously known for its high crime rate, from which he adopted his name.[1] Unemployment, alcoholism, and single parent families are the norm in Zola. Dlamini's father believed to be part of the Mchunu clan abandoned the family, leaving his mother to care for him and his older brother and sister when they were young. Zola himself served time in prison as a juvenile for car theft.[2]

Afrikan Roots is an international and unique house music band based in the capital city of South Africa, Pretoria. The five member band was founded in 2010 by the versatile percussionist Kenneth “Nyekx” Manyemula and consists of five members. Other music maestros in the band are Disc Jockeys Dj Maspila (Katlego Mabasa) and Dj Mosco (Musa Mmotsa), pianist Mercedes Boshego and guitarist Sbusiso Masilela, the latter two who goes by their roots names.

In its inception stage, the group started as Black Boyz and later changed its name to Black Motion in 2009. A year later, Nyekx, the founding member of both Black Boys and Black Motion, split with the group to establish the expansive Afrikan Roots to accommodate a new vision espoused on a variety of African rooted instruments such as percussions, guitars, pianos and drums to deliver live performances each time the band is on
stage.

The foundation phase of Afrikan Roots is layered on endurance encountered in the heartless music industry. The band learned valuable lessons from the split with Black Motion and emerged with that rare African identity which is today the lifeblood of the Afrikan Roots.

After Learning between right and wrong through its music journey, Afrikan Roots came with a new sound which the group coined as “Chubba Cabra.” This phase represents the formalisation of the band as a professional house music band. Afrikan Roots entered the commercial music market in South Africa with hit singles “Akuluwo” in 2011/12 and followed that up with “Ko Morago” and from then it has been hit after hit.
The group was earlier signed to Sheer Music (2018), later to 999 Records until they gained their independence in 2016 to establish their own stable named Roots Kooperative.

Steve Kekana (born August 4, 1958 in Zebediela, Transvaal) is a South African singer and songwriter. Kekana lost his sight at age five, and attended a school for the blind in Pietersburg. During the school years, he nurtured his love for singing, and became a member of amateur groups during the teenage years.
In 1979 and 1980, Kekana won what was then known as the SABC Black Music Award for best male vocalist. Kekana's Raising My Family was a big hit in Europe in 1980. In total, Kekana has recorded more than forty albums. His songs "The Bushman" and "Feel So Strong" (featuring Hotline) were hits on the Springbok Radio Chart (the semi-official South African chart of the time) reaching number 13 and number 6 in 1982 and 1983 respectively.
He has worked with the likes of the late Ray Phiri and the late Nana Coyote.
Steve Kekana is a university graduate with B Juris and LLB degrees. He is an Advocate and a lecturer in Labour Law at the University of South Africa.
