Despite coming from different backgrounds, Natalie and Eric Southward have been friends for most of their lives. Their friendship has been the foundation for their great relationship. Bonded first in middle school by their love of basketball, this couple has found a way to stay together through thick and thin.

Best friends, competitive athletes, devoted parents and passionate about demonstrating their faith, they stick together. When Kim asks, “What makes you a kickass couple?” Natalie replies saying, “We love God more than we love each other.”

In the beginning of their marriage, both had to figure out some compromises in the love department. Since Eric was raised by a single mom who was always busy his home didn’t have a lot of affection, hugs or tenderness. As Eric says, “Natalie taught me how to love that way.” 

Now Eric is extremely comfortable sharing his feelings and his affection with both Eric and their kids. One of the most special things about Eric and Natalie is their willingness to learn from each other. 

When conflict arises Natalie and Eric are able to set aside their differences and wait for the right circumstances to talk about their issues. This way of compartmentalizing their lives has helped their relationship grow.

Natalie & Eric Southward

They started out as two kids from different backgrounds. Eric and Natalie Southward first bonded in 8th grade as basketball buddies and later became friends. Then a few years down the road they said, “I Do.”

With 16 years training as a licensed mental health counselor and couples therapist, Natalie is a founder and director of Life Transformation Counseling. She is also a Gottman Bringing Baby Home and Seven Principles Educator. 

Raised by a single working mom in an urban community, Eric's childhood made him into the man he is today. Eric understands how kids need leadership lessons. He is the founder and director of Southward Elite Basketball and Little Hoopsters Academy; a five month basketball mentorship and coaching development program for kids that focuses on teaching life lessons such as teamwork, respect, discipline and sportsmanship. 

Now Eric and Natalie have been happily married for 13 years. Deeply passionate about God and giving back, Natalie and Eric are modeling what a thriving, healthy relationship looks like to their family, friends, and all who are graced by crossing their paths.

This week Matthew and Kim take a deep dive into the 4th pillar of Trust and Honesty. 

Trust and honesty is built over time. Kim shares her definition of trust saying, “it really means that I feel safe with you. I feel confident that you’re not going to violate me. I’m really comfortable and know that I’m in a good space with you.”

Knowing you can rely and have faith in your partner to tell the truth creates a safe space in your relationship. That warm and loving bond of trust leads to increased emotional connection and enhanced sexual desire. 

But studies show that partners lie to each other. Lies open the door to problems and temptations. A single discovered lie can lead a partner to question and doubt everything about the relationship. 

Think about trust as being a bank account that increases with every example of being honest and truthful with your partner. Those examples of trustworthiness are like bank deposits. When you lie to your partner, or hurt or betray them, you are making withdrawals.
