King for a Day

One of the fascinating aspects of the King film oeuvre is its breadth.  Travis and Lesley take a left turn down a lesser traveled road this week and review the Netflix exclusive Gerald's Game. We got a heads up from Lesley in the last episode that parts of this would be hard to watch, and the amount of time Travis spent with his hands covering his eyes lends credence to this! Controversy hits the King for a Day team as our opinions verge for the first time in the show's lengthy and storied history of two months! This week we review the long-forgotten 1985 anthology horror film, Cat's Eye. This, it turns out, is the first screenplay written by the show's inspiration Stephen King, and one of us thinks that's a good thing and the other person is wrong... Who comes down on which side? Who wins this literary/cinematic intellectual cage match for the ages? You'll have to listen in to find out!

In this week’s episode, Travis and Lesley dissect the cinematic equivalent of the Ebola virus, Graveyard Shift - not too many people encounter it, but God help them if they do!  Check out this episode for some healthy Brad Dourif love, Travis forgetting who the characters are one hour after seeing the film, and as always Lesley finding something to appreciate in the technical side of the production.  If this film could be compared to a septic tank (and I think it can) we ask you dive right in beside us and enjoy a swim around in the murky imagination of Mr. Stephen King.

Dogs! Everyone loves dogs right? That is unless of course the dog is bitten by a bat that causes a global pandemic delaying that Crystal Method concert you've been looking forward to... Only slightly less popular than a dog bitten by a bat that causes rabies, and that dear listener is this subject of this week's film, Cujo - based strangely enough on the novel by Stephen King. Tune in to hear thrilling discussion on automotive glass shatter patterns and why small children in film annoy Travis. Compelling stuff!

Part four of our deep dive into adaptations of Stephen King's work for the screen sees us land squarely in the middle of a teenage sleepover horror marathon with Creepshow 2! Before anyone calls the police and asks us why we are hanging out with teenagers, Travis and Lesley are actually just exploring the work of the horror film dream-team, Stephen King and George Romero. It's our first anthology film, and the first to feature animation! Is it as bad as its reputation hints at? Or can King and Romero surprise us? Tune in and find out.

In episode three we veer wildly back into the realm of high quality films based on Stephen King's work with 1990's Misery.  Sadly less well remembered today than many other films based on King's novels, Misery features one of the all-time great film villain performances from Kathy Bates as Annie, along with some of the most memorably gruesome scenes of torture...  So it's one for the whole family this week, download and enjoy!

Based on the 2006 novel of the same name, Cell is King's version of the zombie apocalypse and the culprit this time is out-of-date cell phones!! Was it poor coverage? No snake game? Overpriced data plans? All is revealed in this week's show where we explore what can be politely described as one of the less successful adaptations of a King novel.
