It's a stereotype that is commonly propagated:  guys in their mid-twenties, living in their parents' basements, playing video games.  This trope suggests that young men are increasingly trading their real lives for virtual lives and, in the process, escaping from their God-given responsibilities to lead within families, the work place, church, and the community.

Is this stereotype legitimate?

In today's Kingdom Culture Conversation, we talk with Ethan Burson, a middle school Bible teacher at Northwest Christian School.  Ethan is also the coach of the Northwest Christian High School eSports team.  As part of the the Arizona Interscholastic Association, Northwest Christian's eSports team competes against other high school throughout the state within games like Super Smash Bros., Rocket League, Overwatch, and others.

In an important Kingdom Culture Conversation, pertaining to the context of video gaming culture, we discuss a recent book by Hanna Rosin called "The End of Men" in which the author suggests that this stereotype just scratches the surface of the issue.

In January of this year, it became official:   the World Health Organization officially approved classifying video game addiction, or gaming disorder, as a disease. The unanimous vote means that gaming disorder will officially be added with the revisions to the International Classification of Diseases, commonly known as the ICD.

Within the recent trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, which ended in an acquittal, there was a surprising moment in which the prosecutor started a line of questioning with the defendant, inquiring about his interest in "Call of Duty", a "first person shooter".  The very clear suggestion was that there is a link between the virtual violence within that particular game and the real world violence of which Rittenhouse was being accused.

Is it responsible for the school to encourage students to play these sorts of games?  Does video game violence propagate violent behavior in the real world?  Today's conversation will cause you to think--and, undoubtedly, everyone will have an opinion!

We're gearing up to start a new podcast tradition, "Throwback Thursday".

Going back to the summer of 2016, long before there was a "Kingdom Culture Conversations" podcast or the Frameworks Biblical worldview initiative, each summer, Northwest Christian School produced a series of weekly videos that stretched through each summer.  These teaching videos were based on the summer reading for that particular summer:  sometimes a passage of scripture or a book centered around Biblical worldview.  As part of this new tradition, we're pulling the audio from those videos and revisiting some of the key worldview concepts that we explored during that time.

In today's third Throwback Thursday, we have the privilege of listening in on a conversation between creationist Russ Miller (of CreationMinistries.org) and Garry Kaiser, a brother in Christ who has gone on to be with the Lord this past year as a result of COVID-19.  In today's episode, you will hear a portion of Garry's amazing testimony--how the Lord used Garry's studies of origins--as an atheist--to bring him to a saving understanding of Jesus as the Creator.

Garry and Russ discuss the Global Flood--the account of Noah, the ark, and the universal deluge from Genesis--and reveal how that truth undermines the foundations of old earth thinking and theories.

Warning:  Although it is not a central topic in today's episode, this particular episode of Kingdom Culture Conversations does make mention of sexual sin and we would encourage parents to listen to this episode before allowing your younger children to hear it.

Mike Genung is the  founder of Blazing Grace, a unique ministry to men and women who struggle with pornography, sexual addiction, and the harm that they cause to both the individual and the family.

Mike struggled with multiple forms of sexual sin from his teen years until 1999.  After being in bondage to sexual sin for 20 years, eight of which were spent in various recovery programs, he was set free after finally putting all my hope and trust in God.

As part of his road to recovery, Mike came to realize that the seeds of his undoing were sown before he was even a teenager.  Further, he has come to appreciate that although teens and adolescents may not have even met their future spouse, they can engage in disciplines and decisions today that will bear fruit in their marital relationships tomorrow.  As part of today's Kingdom Culture Conversation, Mike talks this all through--you don't want to miss it!

During the on-the-ground chapel for Northwest Christian High School on Wednesday, January 12th, the school welcomed four panelists for a Kingdom Culture Conversation that centered around movies, media, television, books, music, and more.  The conversation was recorded and makes up the bulk of yesterday's episode of Kingdom Culture Conversations.

Today, we have the opportunity to hear those same panelists continue their conversation--even more in-depth--as their Kingdom Culture Conversation on movies continued on after the chapel mics were turned off!

Who were the panelists?

Matt Spivey and Adam Sonstroem are professors within the English and communications department at Arizona Christian University.  In particular, both are involved in teaching university-level courses that focus on movies and film.

Damon Evans and Chris Zimmerman work within Cabin Fever Films and Film School 4 Teens.  Cabin Fever Films partners with Northwest Christian School on an annual basis to produce a student film and facilitate the NXNW High School Film Festival.

Dr. Glen Schultz's "Kingdom Education:  God's Plan for Educating Future Generations" is a seminal work in Christian education...and the author himself, with over fifty years in the trenches of Christian Ed, is one of the architects of Christian schooling throughout the world.  In December 2021, Northwest Christian was blessed to have Dr. Schultz drop by the campus unexpectedly and, in the process, we recording three consecutive episodes of Kingdom Culture Conversations (airing January 10-12, 2022) around three salient questions:  "Is God's Word enough for this particular cultural moment?", "Is the evangelical Christian church breaking apart?", and "Is it possible for 'Christian education' to be secularized?"

In today's third and final Kingdom Culture Conversations with Dr. Schultz, we acknowledge that at this point in culture, there are both possibilities and pitfalls in front of Christian education.  One of the most significant pitfalls is the growing "secularization" of Christian schools and universities as God's word is insidiously displaced by the "wisdom" of the contemporary age.
