In first-century Judea, Rome became the occupying force and Herod was just a client king of the Emperor. Caesar was king. He was revered, had his way, and no one dared trample on his authority. With that backdrop of experience, with all the aggravations that brought, the Jews longed for their promised Messiah - a King who would rule over all kings forever. It seemed odd that a crazy man in crazy clothes would be the herald of such a promised King and yet John the baptizer's words, "Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand" was audacious and in the face of those in power. Could this man, Jesus of Nazareth be THAT King?
