  • Episode 15: Interstate Highway vs Neighborhood Destruction (1967)

In 1967 at the age of 13 I watched the earth movers and backhoes dig out my neighborhood from our perch at the edge of our block with my brother Robert. It was decided that the Eisenhower Interstate Highway would cut a swath through West Montgomery and head east , barely missing the local high school, Catholic school and church and and few other places. My mom was given just enough to pay for a "fixer-upper" two blocks from our old house and three blocks from the new highway. Friends and families were lost forever.

  • Are you a PGK? I am!

Are you a PGK? I am, a Preacher's Grandkid that is! I spent many a Summer weekend with my parents taking my grandfather down to his churches in Escambia County, Alabama and Escambia County, Florida... the only county in this state that crosses borders. He was the founder of the congregation in Brewton, Alabama and we have several old photos made before I was born, with my parents and grandparents. I used to run and play in the tall grass near the church, never fearing I might step on a corn snake or something else. Little kids who have no fear can do anything! They grow up to be really curious people!

  • Happy Juneteenth and Happy Mask Day!

Its Juneteenth! Its the first day of the official Mask requirement in Montgomery County and its "Wear RED Day" for our Military! Black Americans began to celebrate Juneteenth in honor of the day Texas - the last rebel state - officially abolished slavery. On June 19, 1865, Union Major Gen. Gordon Granger and his regiment rode into Galveston, Texas, with news the Civil War had ended and that the state's more than 250,000 enslaved people were now free. It was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation – which went into effect on January 1, 1863 – and nearly six months after the 13th Amendment was passed by Congress officially abolishing slavery in the United States.

Its also the first day of the Mayor of Montgomery's Executive Order for Masks in groups of 10 or more. Its for our protection, not politics but for practical protection. Its also "Wear RED Day" to show your support for our Military.

  • Not for my sake but for yours...

This is Part One of Two episodes and I will try hard to get back on schedule after Thursday. Its all about masks and your health. I wear one every day because I have a truly compromised immune system with bouts of the Flu, Pneumonia, in addition to being over 65 so I understand that I have to be very careful. I want to live a long life and enjoy any future grandchildren God has planned for me. #JustWearTheMask PLEASE!!!

  • Timing is everything... when arriving for an event!

I can say that I have never been late for an event since my teen years. My mother impressed in us that no one should ever arrive "fashionably late". You cannot get your message across effectively if the audience is watching you walk up after your arrival or presentation time. For example, if you know that the place you are going to is more than 20 minutes away, leave 45 minutes early, if possible. If you are arriving at a hotel for a speech and need to go down to the banquet room, arrive not less than 15 minutes ahead of schedule so you can meet your hosts and take your seat. Remember to be PUNCTUAL and TIMELY!

  • Get to know your City and State Officials!

As a pageant titleholder I have found that it can be a key factor in fundraising, pageant advertising and appearances if you get to know local and State officials. I recently received a Letter of Commendation from the Governor of Alabama, Kay Ivey and posted it to my Facebook page. In two short days it had already gotten more than 45 likes.  I can be as simple as looking up the right Public Relations person at the office you want to message and make your request. As a former PR person for my church and a Veteran's Hospital, I learned the importance of phone calls, text messages and a well-written letter.

  • Talent Outfits and Musicality... Making it work in competition

What works for you? Playing a musical Piece, a dance performance or something verbal like humor or drama? I have always shied away from performing pageant but there is no getting around it in Senior America. Two years ago I decide to change from a verbal performance to a Praise dance. I am professional trained and have a degree in Fine Arts but that's hard to do on stage and have a serious impact. Select your music first and then look for a suitable costume to create the right feel and look for your performance.

  • Pageant Planet, Safety First & Quarantining Appearances

I just recently posted my contestant profile to Pageant Planet and it was so easy and on top of that its free. I took a deep look at the rest of the young ladies competing and saw the photos of a few friends and a few Facebook Peeps as well. There's nothing like finding new ways to advertise your pageant, your title and your Social Impact Initiative using social media. • Day 7: "Lips, Teeth and Tongue"

Remembering the lessons of a former mentor, Dr. Robert Barmettler, Speech and Drama Coach at Huntingdon College. He always told us to E-NUN-CI-ATE! Effective speaking skills involve knowing how to say it, when to say, and how to use it to make the impact you expect when you make a presentation!

  • Day 6: Pageant Queens in Quarantine - Keep up the Great Work!

https://www.facebook.com/alabamasenioramerica/?modal=admin_todo_tour We have "time on our hands" but that doesn't mean the work stops as pageant queens. If you have a particular cause or foundation that you created or support, if you have a "Sister-Queen" who needs support - financial, physical, or emotional, take time out and contact them. See what you can do to make your cause more visible to day and every day. Don't allow the grass to grown under your feet. Stay active. Stay informed. Stay in contact with each other.
