This episode continues a segment we are calling Sunday Study Hall, where we dive deeper into the past week's sermon topic (unless we're more than a week out, like right now) to follow rabbit trails from the biblical text and explore the depths and riches of what we taught on Sunday to a deeper level than we could in that context. In this episode, Ryan is joined by Jesse to talk about Jesus and his family's flight to Egypt to escape Herod. The conversation takes us through the socio-political dimensions of Herod's power in that day, how Matthew and the rest of the New Testament authors creatively use the Old Testament to talk about Jesus, and what Matthew meant when he said, "what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: 'He will be called a Nazarene,'" seeing how Nazareth has no mention in the Old Testament (the town was established around 250 years after the ending of the last book in the Old Testament, so there's no mention of it).
