Stories from the Inside Man
Journey to September 18, 2026.
The NFT market has collapsed. But the mission to bring Shel Talmy’s early David Bowie recordings to the world continues.
In this episode, I share why news of the Bowie estate’s publishing catalogue deal with Warner Chappell looked like the opening we had been waiting for—and why I suggested approaching Warner about Shel’s recordings.
With discussions moving slowly and Shel growing impatient, another idea takes shape. I’m in Stockholm, the Rolling Stones are in town, and I see a possibility: could Mick Jagger help bring a fresh interpretation to these early recordings of his old friend?
An approach is made. But with the Stones busy working on their own album and strict COVID protocols surrounding the band, the answer comes back no. We keep moving.
Through personal recollections and correspondence, this chapter follows the ideas, introductions and setbacks along the road towards release.
The episode closes with a brief excerpt of “I Do Believe,” an early David Bowie demo produced by Shel Talmy.
Next: The Finish Line. The story takes a heartbreaking turn before Shel’s dream is finally realised.
