KMUSICEVERYDAY

On this week... It's all about the city of Seoul. After hearing "Seoul, Seoul, Seoul," by Sumin off of her new album, I noticed I was coming across a bunch of songs that showed love for Korea's capital city. And there's more than I thought (which is why this one goes a little long).

The range of sounds and genres in this one is amazing. From jazzy hip-hop to indie rock, there's a little bit of everything for everyone. Hopefully this gives a full spectrum of the sounds of Seoul city.

I visited Seoul a few years back but only spent less than a full day there. However, I did make it to the top of Namsan Tower. The view was spectacular and I can't wait to go back and fully experience what the city has to offer. And if you ever find yourself in Seoul, hopefully this will serve as you're soundtrack. If you're in Seoul right now, then this one's for you... I know there's a lot of KME listeners out there. Enjoy!

On this week... It's a jam-packed episode! There have been so many great summer comebacks and releases it's ridiculous.

So we start it off with some new Red Velvet (the greatest group of all time) and their song, "With You" off their newest release "Summer Magic." Hearkening back to the "red" concept (cutesy, playful), the whole release is fun and up-beat and these girls keep coming with the heat (Pun and rhyme not intended).

Another highlight: LOONA is here! The full group has finally debuted with "favOrite," and it's amazing. Can't wait to here more.

We also have new stuff from Laboum, Stray Kids, DIA, The Boyz, SF9, iKon, and a lot more! There has been so many strong releases lately that we had to abandon the whole "B-Side" thing for this episode, but it's well worth it. So have some fun as summer winds down and enjoy!

On this week... We're back! I took a week off for a much needed summer break but no need to worry, because we are back in full force. This week we're getting down with some heavy trap/ hip-hop. So get ready for some distorted bass, fast raps, and naughty language. Then we'll slowly transition into some alternative RnB tracks to end the show. All bridged together by some dope beat instrumentals. I hope you all are having a good summer wherever you are! Enjoy!

Also, I decided to play some groups I don't normally play, such as Dreamcatcher and Stray Kids. Plus, Mamamoo, Pentagon, I.O.I. and more!

Then there's some hip-hop vibes near the end from Boi B and MaseWonder and a track that might seem similar... It's "Love is Who" by an amazing artist named Luna-tune, whom I've played a lot on the KME Mixtape and consider a KME All-Star. She helped out Seungri on his recent solo release on a song I played last week called, "Love is You." She's an amazing artist so please go check out her stuff! Enjoy!

On this week... It's one of my favorites. We start off with some powerful indie/electronic female artists. It's a good mix of house, techno, dance, and electronic music from KME All-Stars Cifika, OOHYO, Peggy Gou, and Yeseo. Speaking of Yeseo, she just released her 1st LP titled, "DAMN RULES," and it's nothing short of amazing. Please go check it out and the rest of her work if you haven't heard her before.

Then we round out the episode with some great RnB vibes from a range of artists like Shaun, Nieah, SLCHLD, and more! All songs range from various intensities, grooves, and tempos but are absolutely great. I love every track I put on this episode and hope you all enjoy it as much as me. Enjoy!

This release is no different. Packed with amazing features, catchy hooks, and Crush's quirky attitude, "Wonderlost" is truly a great piece of work and solidifies Crush as one of my favorite artists of all-time.

Plus, it's more of a hip-hop/RnB focused episode. I've ventured away a bit in search of different sounds lately, but I have to come back to my ol' faithful sound every so often. All the tracks selected this week are absolutely a product of the vibe I picked up from Crush's new album. We've got some new Sik-K, some boom-bap hip hop joints, some silky RnB grooves, and some high-energy bangers to bring you into the weekend. Enjoy!

On this week... It's another special episode and this one is an all English episode. Now while "English K-pop" may seem like an oxymoron, it's still an aspect of K-music and K-pop I'd like to explore. And how it's used has changed significantly over the years.

On this episode, I start off with more current songs that are performed in English and end with more classic "English version" K-Pop. In past years, English versions of K-Pop were generally used as a tool to garner more Western listeners. This is especially true in the late 2000s to early 2010s, where companies tried to create English versions of the biggest K-Pop songs in an attempt to make a significant push into the Western mainstream. However, most of these "English versions" were pretty terrible, and understandably so. It's difficult to directly translate Korean to English and the songs would actually be more off-putting than relatable.

Thankfully, in recent years this practice appears less often. Now it seems that instead of an "English version" of a K-Pop song, we get a English song by a K-Pop artist, which are two significantly different things. This may be due to two things:

1. K-Pop has risen to extreme popularity not only in the west, but globally, all the while releasing and performing songs solely in Korean. So the K-Pop industry has realized that it doesn't necessarily need to put out English songs in order to have a wider appeal. Which absolutely makes sense. K-Pop isn't K-Pop if it isn't in Korean right?

2. There seems to be more of an embrace of and by foreign-born K-Pop artists to perform in English. Which also makes sense. While they are K-Pop stars, artists like Jay Park, Tiffany, Amber, and Eric Nam are all American and native English speakers. At some point, it makes sense for them to create music that is wholly relatable to them, and because of that it comes off more authentic, rather than a loosely translated version of a Korean song.

I'm not trying to make some grand thesis here, but these are simply some of my thoughts on the matter based on personal observation. So check out some these great "English versions" from K-Pop artists and let me know what some of your favorites are. Enjoy!
