"For a split second, Reston's field of vision filled with exploding stars. The officer had been in his fair share of fights before, but never had he been knocked for such a disorienting loop as this. As he fell and rolled down the embankment, he knew that something had gone terribly wrong: His jaw collapsed upon itself and he realized that his teeth had canted 45 degrees and were lying sideways in his mouth."

I first met Jared Reston at the Shot Show a couple years ago. There was something familiar about his face. Then it hit me. This was 'the' Jared Reston - my company has been playing the video interview of him describing his fight for his life in our SPEAR law enforcement classes for many years. We show it to inspire and exemplify the 'never quit' mindset. Enjoy this call, we discuss the ambush, the gunfight, current training and much more. Meet Jared Reston.

The "No One Special" podcast is a new series that features everyday citizens talking about how they handled fear, danger, and violence.
Ep. 1: Jen Patton attended our Be Your Own Bodyguard course in 2010. Little did she know that shortly after the course she would find herself alone at a gas station, out of money with several assailants converging on her.
This is from the message she sent me shortly after the incident:
11/02/2010Tony, so your class in Vegas just may have saved me. Long story short, I pulled into a gas station in the WRONG part of town East Palo Alto...
Listen to the podcast to hear the entire story.
Jen attended our 1-day course that teaches participants essential principles needed to help navigate violence:
We cover unique psychological strategies that help people understand what 'bad-guys' want and 'don't want' and how to how to mentally disarm and devalue themselves as potential targets.
We do our best to prepare and equip people with the skills and knowledge to handle confrontations.

ATM video #2
In the blink of an eye, Kevin Ogar went from completing what should have been an ordinary snatch — 235 pounds, light for his one-rep max of 300 — to death’s door, paralyzed from the waist down.
Small things matter. A lifting platform that tilted slightly backward, a barely noticeable heel slip, a small backward-forward movement to regain balance, microseconds at best, all combined in an instant. Ogar bailed on the lift. The barbell went out of control behind him, bouncing off the back of his left shoulder, into a stack of 45-pound weight plates, and then the bar came whipping back, crushing part of his thoracic spine. -From the Team USA article

I first learned about Kevin when news of the 2014 event hit. I finally met him at the CrossFit Games a couple years later and he asked me to come to Denver to conduct a seminar at his CrossFit Box. Kevin's relationship with fear and fear management is unique, to say the least. His mental toughness has created a compassion and passion that makes him an incredibly motivating and effective coach. It's hard to slack when your coach is Kevin Ogar.

"We have learned more about the psychology and physiology of combat in the last 50 years than in the previous 5,000 years put together." - LT. COL. Dave Grossman I've known Dave Grossman for decades. From long before 9-11. A mutual passion for studying violence, specifically, the link between physiology and psychology, cemented our friendship. Dave was the first person to really study it in a scholarly fashion and has authored several books on the subject. We discuss so many things on this call from violence to sleeping habits, his knowledge-base is astounding. Listening to Dave is always thought-provoking. Enjoy this talk.

KILLOLOGY, (n): The scholarly study of the destructive act, just as sexology is the scholarly study of the procreative act. In particular, killology focuses on the reactions of healthy people in killing circumstances (such as police and military in combat) and the factors that enable and restrain killing in these situations.
I've been a fan of Kyle Reyes since I first saw his 'Snowflake' test.
After watching the 'snowflake' video and reading some of his other posts I knew he would be a really fun guest. The talk turned out to be more riveting than I imagined.
Many of my online supporters are hardworking 2a, military, law enforcement and other first-responders, so I know you'll all love this podcast.
Kyle works very hard to promote and support our law enforcement and military. He's a thin blue line-backing,veteran-loving, whiskey drinking patriot.
Kyle was recently named as the National Spokesman for Law Enforcement Today.
I first heard of Julien Pineau from several of my affiliates in Europe who are training under him too. They said his approach to movement reminded them of some of the underpinnings of the SPEAR System - specifically the relationship of how fear afflicts mindset and therefore movement. [For decades I have encouraged people to look at the relationship between primal gross motor movement versus complex and fine motor skills and to look into how physiology and fear can override cognition.]
Lots of big words but it makes sense after a few simple exercises.
This call was very inspiring and fascinating because Julien has approached movement with a similar filter, including looking at exercise patterns in relationship to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Very interesting episode. If you're into holistic training you'll dig it.
