    In this episode of Know How, Padre and Jason show you how to use a Synology NAS, Plex and an HDHomeRun tuner to create an Over-The-Air networked Digital Video Recorder that will allow you to make your favorite programming available on-demand... with NO monthly fee! -- Also... privacy enthusiasts need to see our step-by-step creation of a SSL VPN using a Synology RT2600AC router.

    Project Summary We're going to use a Synology NAS, a Plex account, and a SiliconDust HDHomeRun to create an OTA (Over-The-Air) Network DVR. (Digital Video Recorder) What will you need? 1. A COMPATIBLE Synology NAS (Many of their older boxes will not support Plex) 2. A PLEX pass 3. A Network-connected Tuner SiliconDust HDHomeRun Connect Duo ~$80 * Dual OTA Tuners * 100Mbps Ethernet Demo: 1. Connect Antenna to HDHomeRun 2. Connect Network to HDHomeRun 3. Connect Power to HDHomeRun 4. Run HDHomeRun application 5. Scan for Channels ** This will make sure that you've got your HDHR connected properly to the network and the antenna Now Let's setup Plex! * We've already installed the Plex package and made sure that we've got the latest update * The following instructions are assuming you have a working Plex installation and HDHR From Home 1. Under the "Electornic Program Guide" windows -- Select Language -- Input your Postal Code (TWiT is 94954) (Plex is finding a program guide for your area) -- "Continue" ** This will take a while... it's downloading all the airings for your area. ** Plex Live is now installed!   • KH 385: Lithium Powered, UPS Raspberry Pi Case - LiPi: A self-contained, battery powered Raspberry Pi NUC

    The Raspberry Pi is an amazing device that can be everything from a server to a game machine, but have you ever wanted to have a self-contained, portable unit? Or maybe a server NUC with a built-in uninterruptible Power Supply?

    On this episode of Know How, Patrick and Padre take you through the steps of creating a "LiPi" which can give you up to 12 hours of power for your RasPi while also acting as an auto-switching UPS that can run on 6-26 volts!

    Project Summary:


    We've done several RasPi projects this year that could bennefit from an independent power source. (The TorPi, the Pi-Hole, The RetroPi) -- We want to create a power system that can act BOTH as a power system AND an uninterruptible power system.

    Project Requirements:

  • Must have a way to power the RasPi WITHOUT using the USB connector
  • Must have a way to switch from line power to battery power AND BACK without disrupting operation.
  • Must have a way to turn OFF power completely (to prevent draining the battery pack)
  • Must operate or more than 3 hours
  • NUC sized
  • Should have a way to gracefully power-down the Pi
  • Must have a way to swap the SD card without dissasembly

  • ~5 Watt/Hours
  • Each Cell can provide (3800 x 3.7 = ) ~14 Watt/Hours
  • We have ~42 Watt/Hours of capacity
  • But we don't run down all the way... 30% is when the protection circuit will kick in.
  • So we should count on 29 Watt hours of USABLE power
  • 29 / 5 = Just under 6 hours AT FULL POWER
  • Shutting down WiFi/Bluetooth and not pegging 100% power should give us close to 8 hours.
