  • Judaism's Gifts to the World - Lesson 4
    Created Equal?
    Exploring a Not-so-self-evident Truth
    With Rabbi Ari Sollish
(Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on February 18, 2020)
Humanity long insisted that mastery over others was a birthright: some
were born to dominate, and others to be dominated. In recent history,
the Jewish ideals of equality and individuality have been widely
adopted so that most people agree that no one is intrinsically inferior or
superior. These concepts originate in the Torah's revelation that we are all equally created in G-d's image and that just as G-d cannot be redundant, nor can humans crafted in His image.

  • Learning How to Love - 13 - Personality
Learning How to Love - Part 13
    "Personality"
    With Rabbi Ari Sollish
(Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on February 16, 2020)
The great mystic Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk would say incredibly wise lines. Among them:
"There is nothing more complete than a broken heart, and there is nothing more upright than a crooked ladder."
"Not every thought should be said. Not every speech should be written down. And not all writings are fit for print."
"Death is but a change of circumstances, like moving homes. But a wise person sees to it that the new home is better and nicer than the old one."
But it's this line of the Kotzker that we'll focus on in this Kabbalah & Coffee:
"If I am I because I am I, and you are you because you are you—then I am I and you are you. But if I am I because you are you, and you are you because I am I—then I am not I and you are not you."
In this session of Kabbalah & Coffee we unpack this incredibly wise statement and learn the true meaning of personality, diversity, and unity. I look forward to studying with you!

  • Judaism's Gifts to the World - Lesson 3
    Divine Image
    Who Says Life is Sacred?
    With Rabbi Ari Sollish
(Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on February 13, 2020)
It might seem axiomatic that human life is valuable, but a hard look at
history reveals that the concept of human life being precious was
once considered utterly radical. To discover how this value broke its
way out of the exclusive domain of the Torah to become obvious to
all, this lesson explores underlying dilemmas: What makes us human?
And what are we here for?

    Feel-good is a Faulty Barometer
    With Rabbi Ari Sollish
(Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on February 12, 2020)
We are constantly faced with moral dilemmas, sometimes so complex, every option seems worse than the next. How can we best navigate the moral mazes of life? The answer lies in an ancient multi-generational narrative that moves from Abraham to Amalek.

  • Learning How to Love - 12 - Spiritual Friendship
Learning How to Love - Part 12
    "Spiritual Friendship"
    With Rabbi Ari Sollish
(Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on February 9, 2020)
"A sweet friendship refreshes the soul." So says King Solomon in the Book of Proverbs.
In more recent times, it's been said that, "A friend is one who overlooks your broken fence and admires the flowers in your garden."
We all know the power of friendship to provide for our need to feel loved and accepted and secure. But there's a spiritual side to friendship too.
In this session of Kabbalah & Coffee we consult the Talmud and the writings of Jewish mysticism to arrive at an entirely new way of understanding the power of friendship. As we'll learn, friends aren't just good for our physical well-being -- they're essential to our spiritual health as well.
