KPFA - About Health episodes

  • 4/12/21 Intuitive Eating and Gentle Nutrition

Weight: It’s one of the most common things people berate themselves about. And, of course, there’s a whole industry that’s developed around the topic. Almost every food you can imagine has been ruled “bad” or “unhealthy” by some authority figure or another: breads, grains, pasta, potatoes, sugar. Fruit is off limits in some diets, nuts have too much fat, eggs are too high in saturated fat, meat isn’t good for us, etc., etc., etc. It’s easy to wonder, “What’s left to eat?” In this episode, our guest argues that the emphasis the nutrition industry and our society has placed on weight loss is ultimately counter-productive to our personal health and well-being. She advocates for a kinder, gentler way to think about nutrition. Host David B. Feldman interviews Rachael Hartley, registered dietitian and author of Gentle Nutrition: A Non-Diet Approach to Healthy Eating.

  • 3/29/21 Allergies
Spring has officially sprung. And, along with sunshine and warm weather, Spring brings allergies. According to the American Academic of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, more than 26 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, and that’s not including allergies from food and other sources. And particularly for Bay Area residents, the same blooming flowers and lush plant-life that make our little corner of the world beautiful, can also cause runny noses, sneezing, irritated eyes, and other allergy symptoms. So, in this episode, we talk about allergies—what causes them and what we can do about them. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Dr. Michael Lenoir, allergist, pediatrician, and former host of 'About Health.'
