Have you ever had a friend who seemed to drain all your emotional energy? Or perhaps a family member who was always in your business, trying to tell you how to live your life? It’s an inevitable part of many relationships: There will be times—even with the people we love most—when it’s important to set limits, ask for what we need, or give feedback about what’s not working for us. But these limits, sometimes called “boundaries,” can be challenging and awkward to set. So, this hour, we’ll talk about why it’s not only okay but sometimes necessary to set boundaries in relationships, and how doing so can strengthen our connections. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Juliane Taylor Shore, psychotherapist and author of the new book, Setting Boundaries That Stick.

The harsh reality is that not all patients are treated equally, and racism has consequences on a person’s health and health care. This week, we talk with a luminary cardiologist about the heart in two senses. First, we discuss how to take care of our hearts in the physical sense: What to do to keep our hearts healthy and beating for a long time to come. But, we all know there’s another, more metaphorical and perhaps even spiritual way of talking about our heart. It’s the organ to which we often attribute love, care, sadness, and many of our deepest feelings. So, we have a wide-ranging conversation, asking our guest what drew her to the field in the first place, how she approaches taking care of patients, and what deeper lessons she’s drawn from her work. Host David B. Feldman interviews Dr. Anu Lala, cardiologist and associate professor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
