[caption id="attachment_239755" align="alignleft" width="323"] Richard Wolinsky and Jim Obergefell at KPFA, June 2016,[/caption]
A conversation with Jim Obergefell, co-author of Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality. Hosted by Richard Wolinsky
In June, 2015 the Supreme Court decided in Obergefell v Hodges that gay marriage became the law of the land. In the six years that followed, gay marriage has been routinely accepted across the United States and few blink twice when someone mentions his husband or her wife. Richard Wolinsky interviewed Jim Obergefell, the man whose name appears on the decision, a year later while he was on tour for the book Love Wins, which he co-authored with Debbie Cenziper.
Jim Obergefell's husband John in Ohio was dying when he was approached by an attorney who explained that because the state did not recognize gay marriages from other states, Jim's name would never appear on John's death certificate. Jim and John both agreed to go for it, and the result, in June 2015 in the case Obergefell v Hodges, the Supreme Court made gay marriage the law of the land. Since then he has become a spokesperson for gay rights around the country.
In this compelling discussion recorded on June 22, 2016, Jim Obergefell talks about the case, about his relationship, and about how his life has changed in the year following the decision.

Armistead Maupin: In honor of Pride Month, two interviews with Armistead Maupin, the first recorded in June, 2007, and the second recorded in January 2015, with host Richard Wolinsky.
Armistead Maupin is the author of the legendary "Tales of the City Series," which was later turned into four successful miniseries on television, and later a musical at ACT in San Francisco.
Following nearly twenty years since the previous book in his series, Armistead Maupin returned back to 28 Barbary Lane and its proprieter, Anna Madrigal, with "Michael Tolliver Lives" in the spring of 2007. In that interview, he talks about the history of "Tales of the City" and about his career as a writer.
In 2014, he ended the series with "The Days of Anna Madrigal," and the second interview was recorded in January 2015 when the book came out in trade paperback. In this interview he talks about his decision to end the series, as well as the ACT musical.
"Tales of the City: The Musical," which played at ACT's Geary Theatre in 2011, streams as part of Pride festivies, June 21 - 27, 2021. For more information, go to the ACT website [2].

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky.

    Bookwaves Special Pride Hour
Paul Rudnick, author of the novel "Playing the Palace," and the teleplay for the HBO film "Coastal Elites," in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky.
Playwright, screenwriter and novelist Paul Rudnick's latest novel, "Playing the Palace," is the story of a gay man living in New York who falls in love with a gay Prince of Wales, and what ensues. His recent film, "Coastal Elites," with Bette Midler, Dan Levy and others, is a contemporary account of life during the first half of 2020 when the awfulness of Donald Trump met the awfulness of the Covid-19 pandemic, seen as five separate monologues.
Paul Rudnick has a long career as a playwright, with such plays as "Jeffrey," his view of the AIDS epidemic and how an HIV-negative man deals with the crisis, "I Hate Hamlet," and "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told." His screenplays include "Addams Family Values," "In and Out," and "Sister Act." He is currently working on a musical version of "The Devil Wears Prada," based on the screenplay, for which he was one of several script doctors.
Paul Rudnick is also the author of film reviews by Libby Waxman-Gellmer, which have appeared in both Premiere Magazine and The New Yorker.

Kate MacKay is the curator of a retrospective of the Four Seasons cycle of films by the great French New Wave director Eric Rohmer, streaming on the BAM/PFA [2] website through July 28, 2021. She talks about the films and about Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive's year during the Covid shutdown with host Richard Wolinsky.
Eric Rohmer (1920-2010) was one of the contributors of the magazine Cahiers du Cinema, along with Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard and was one of the founders of the French New Wave. His success came later than that of his colleagues, finally arriving in 1969 with My Night at Maud's, and continued both commercially and artistically into the 21st Century.
The films streaming [3] in this Tales of the Four Seasons cycle, A Tale of Springtime, A Winter's Tale, A Tale of Summer and A Tale of Autumn were all filmed between 1990 and 1998 when Rohmer was into his seventies. Despite that, the films all feel like the work of a young independent film-maker, and not an old master.  Eric Rohmer Wikipedia page. [4]
Kate MacKay has been as Associate Curator of Film since 2016, and has programmed several film retrospectives over the course of her career in Berkeley and previously in Toronto.
This brilliant and incisive essay [5] by Richard Brody from the New Yorker discusses the four films, and Rohmer.

This return to live theatre celebrates the human spirit as it chronicles Hirabayashi’s journey from college in Seattle all the way to the Supreme Court, and eventually to a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Directed by Jeffrey Lo, with Jomar Tagatac [8] starring as Hirabayashi,
Hold These Truths made its world premiere in 2007 at East West Players in Los Angeles. In 2012, the solo play made its Off Broadway premiere at Epic Theatre Company and received a 2013 Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance. Flynn Berry, whose latest thriller is "Northern Spy," set in contemporary Northern Ireland, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. Recorded via zencastr on May 12, 2021.
Flynn Berry is the author of two other novels, "Under the Harrow," which won the Edgar Award for best first novel, and "A Double Life."
"Northern Spy" takes place in Northern Ireland as the tension between Catholics and Protestants has ratcheted up several notches. A single Catholic mother of an infant son, working as a producer in Belfast's BBC studios, finds herself increasingly drawn into dealings with the IRA through her sister, who had lived a double life for the previous seven years.
In this interview Flynn Berry discusses how she came to write the novel, her writing process, and her history as an author of thrillers.

Jacques d’Amboise (1934-2021) in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, April 6, 2011, during the tour for the memoir, "I Was A Dancer."
Jacques d’Amboise, who died on May 2, 2021 at the age of 88 following complications from a stroke, was a principal dancer for the New York City Ballet from 1953 to his retirement in 1984. As such, he was considered the living embodiment of the choreography of the great George Balanchine.
In 1976, he founded the National Dance Institute to teach dance to children. In time, he became one of the most famous dancers in America, appearing as one of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and as the male dancer in the second act ballet in Carousel in those respective 1950s films.
