KPFA - Corona Calls episodes

  • Corona Calls for 01.16.2024 – Paperpalooza

    Discussed in this episode:

    • A study recently published in Clinical Infectious Diseases finds COVID viral load is peaking later after symptom onset than at the start of the pandemic https://doi.org/10.1093/cid/ciad582
    • A laboratory study on syrian hamsters found temperature and humidity had no statistically significant impact on the rate of airborne transmission. This suggests any seasonal pattern of COVID surges is determined by changes in behavior (like socializing indoors for holidays) https://doi.org/10.1038/s44298-023-00011-3
    • A relatively small study of blood samples of people with Long Covid suggests a mechanism for some cases: immune dysregulation, possibly due to reservoirs of live virus or viral particles stimulating an ongoing immune response. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41590-023-01724-6

          • Corona Calls for 11.27.2023 – A new wave in China?

            Discussed in this episode:

            • Just before Thanksgiving, the WHO asked China for data on a surge in respiratory illness that has reportedly led to long lines at hospitals, especially children’s hospitals, in the country’s north.
            • China’s responses so far indicate it’s found no new pathogens driving the surge. The country’s health officials attribute it to this being the first cold and flu season since China lifted its strict Zero Covid restrictions earlier this year. In other words: a lot of children in China are getting their first infections with serious respiratory pathogens at the same time, because COVID precautions prevented them from getting sick for most of the past three years. (That doesn’t mean there’s more disease than there would be without the COVID restrictions — just more at the same time.)
